If City don’t win the league

If City somehow do not win their game with Brighton at the weekend and Liverpool win the league should Pep be classed as a flop?

He’s struggled in Europe the last few years and the owners are desperate for that European trophy. He’s spent way more than any other manager without having to sell his best players.

All the other managers come under scrutiny yet the media seem to leave him alone.

I really can’t see them losing or drawing to Brighton but you never know in football.

Come on Brighton

Like I said, I can understand it from a general populace perspective but not people that are really interested in football.

From a coaching perspective, he will be judged from the board on the standard of performances and consequently results. If we don’t win the league this year, then that’s not an underperformance on Guardiolas part given how many points he’s accumulated, it’s an over performance by whoever wins.

He’s said a few times the most important thing is to get to the end of the season and be challenging across the board. If that happens, then you’ll eventually inevitably end up winning some and that’s exactly the situation we’re in - competing to the end of the season.

People seem to get more binary about things the closer their own clubs get to winning things too. I get it, but it’s far more about the journey for me than the end result.

I'm very interested in football though.

I mean in context, per each season, I think I could make a case for Liverpool not winning the Prem on every single occasion. I still think we've underperformed in the Prem era.

It's like when Lawro has a team down as never to lose. In context yes I would probably never tip City to lose. If you asked me would they go unbeaten all season I'd say don't be daft.

Wouldn't say he's a flop no. Ok, City haven't performed how they would expect to in Europe, but they've got an incredible team that is capable of winning anything. I'm sure they will improve in Europe soon enough and get to where they want to be and I'm sure they'd fancy winning it over the next few years.

This thread is about assessing the individual coach rather than the club though. If that coach delivers a points total that is higher than every other team has every managed to in the PL before aside from himself, then regardless of whether someone else also manages to do it is not an underperformance on his part.

Yes fair comment although I was pretty clear about my evaluation.

Not a flop but it wouldn't amaze me if he's sacked this year or next. They want that champions league and he just isn't doing it. Would be possibly the stupidest thing ever done by a football club though

I personally don't see any realistic scenario where they will sack him.
The owner and chairman have talked about wanting to win the cl. Never thought they have an obsession for it like some make out.

Well in that case he has taken City from battling for 4th spot to one of the best teams of the Premier League era and one of the most feared sides in Europe. The only other coach who can rival that statement, Jurgen Klopp.

If Guardiola is to be known as a flop if he doesn't win the league, then that would be like labelling Klopp the same because he hasn't won a trophy yet. Yes, I'm aware he will have if City finish 2nd obviously, but I'm talking about at present.

Yeah my original comment was really referring to you anyway robbing (although I do think your evaluation of it is true, I’m not sure it’s relevant . Underperforming under Pellegrini for two seasons was one of the reasons he was brought in)

pep is a flop in Europe for sure
he won 2 Cls titles with probably the best footballing side I've seen...prime messi/xavi/iniesta

that team should have won 4 in a row imo

flopped at Bayern and now at man city in Europe...with v poor away records , esp in the Ko rounds

That what I mean about judging without context.

A game being lost doesn’t always mean the coach is at fault. It’s one of those anomalies where in most instances, knowledge of football has gone up hugely due to the over-saturation of it. Some parts of it have gone the other way though and way too simplistic.

I thought he was culpable at Bayern once and once with us.
