Does the Premier League deserve 6 CL places

I was watching Mourinho's analysis of the CL final and he (rightly) said that the 5th and 6th place Premier League teams are too good for the Europa League, as proved this season.

I don't want to sound arrogant or anything, but would it not be fairer to have 6 Premier League teams in the Champions League simply because, they are good enough to play in that competition? Even if it meant putting 5th and 6th into the qualifying rounds, it makes sense doesn't it? Instead of having filler teams in the competition like the teams that always finish 4th in their groups, if you have 5th and 6th of the Premier League in the competiton, it's a stronger competition with better teams.

What do people think?

And yet nobody (besides ourselves) saw us a credible Champions League winners in any way, hence you made my point for me. In my opinion we completely deserved it, but that's not the general conscious I assure you - most people found it 'silly'.

How were Chelsea not credible winners. They won it.

Just a weird argument.

Just looked that up. Your completely right. I don't recall where I heard that league winners thing (I even thought Chelsea were barred from the first one for a different reason lol), but yeah.... your spot on.

I still don't agree with the premise though, even though you shattered my tradition argument . There's no telling where the buck stops if only the best teams (which in itself is a matter of opinion) are allowed entry.

It's hard, because it has to be competitive. But it also has to be representative of the continent. But the gaps are massive and it is impossible to fix it.

Arsenal and United would both embarrass themselves and the country if they were in the CL, so definitely no.

Champions league should be a reward, not a guarantee
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Would the competiton not be more interesting with more teams who could be a threat?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really, because they're not more of a threat
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well United reached the quarter finals and Chelsea and Arsenal finished above them so evidently they are more capable of competing in the Champions League than most other teams in the competition
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But they have no chance of winning it so who cares

Would the premier league be less interesting if you knew exactly who was going to get champions league every season?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Higher quality ties which would be better spectacles would be one huge reason. Barcelona vs Chelsea or Barcelona vs Lyon? Schalke vs City or Arsenal vs City?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're also decreasing the number of potential upsets which are some of the best moments in the champions league, Celtic beatng Barca, BATE bearing bayern, Chelsea beating bayern, helsinborg beating inter etc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
strange that spurs beating city wasnt on that list

The top 10 in England / Spain are better than some of the champion in the champions league never mind top 6 . The europa league is a bit of a joke at this point .

No.

I for one would always prefer to watch my team play a foreign team every day rather than another PL team.

Also, ask ANY City fan, they must be piѕѕed off with meeting PL clubs in the CL.

I would honestly prefer only top 2 teams from every UEFA nation enter the CL. The next 2 teams in the EL and the return of the CWC for winners (or best placed teams not already in Europe) of each league's domestic cups.

You also asked would people rather watch Barca v Lyon or Barca v Utd?
Why not RM v Ajax?

Cup competitions are more about upsets (giant killing) than the big hitters slugging it out every round. Remove that element and you kill the whole competition.

In your opinion.

Strange that people want more equal representation, yet the viewing figures for games between the lesser nations are near zero and the ones with the big clubs still are high.
Wonder how many would tune in for AEK Athens against Plzen in a CL quarter final compared to Barca vs Bayern
