What is good/realistic this summer?

Title says it all really. There is a lot of negativity around the club at the moment but with a good summer of transfers I think we could challenge for top 4 again.

What I'd like to see is the clearing out of players who don't want to be at the club, no matter who they are, and young hungry talented guys coming in.

Outgoings:
DDG (£40m) - has tried to leave on three separate occasions. Time to cash in and probably let him have his best years fighting for big honours..
Pogba (£130m) - The guy wants a new challenge, fine, go.
Lukaku (£60m) - I don't dislike Lukaku, he doesn't suit how Ole wants to play going forward, and I think he knows it.
Rojo (£5m)
Darmian (£5m)

Total: £250m

Incomings:

James (£15m)
AWB (£55m)
Tielemans (£40m)
Maddison (£60m)
Koulibaly/Maguire (£70m-£100m)
Tuanzebe (back from loan)

Total:

£240m - £270m

Net Spend between: -£10m and £20m

What would be your good but realistic summer window?

Who would you suggest this summer BK?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

In midfield?

Tielemens, Fernandes and someone to play deeper; Partey, Rabiot, Rice... Someone like that.

Ziyech is available for RW for apparently a low fee. Worth a punt until Sancho is available I'd have thought.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure I’d trust Rabiot in the number six role with two AMs (or an AM and B2B for that matter). Rice, sure, but his club have said he won’t be leaving whatever happens.

I wouldn’t be gutted to see Matic stay on in the role *if* Garner was given significant time there this season.

CB, CF, RB and more quality in the heart of the midfield are bigger priorities IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a bit left-field but I wouldn't even be against seeing Tuanzebe there. Has played the role before, is fast, strong, very composed and good on the ball. He may not have the intricate line-splitting passing as a specialist, but it may be an interesting way of getting him into the team and getting more PL experience under his belt. Vincent Kompany started his career in that position remember!

Life would have been so much easier if we had retained Herrera, who I would have played in the CDM position. He made that position his own for a season until Matic came in.

I'm probably in the minority who think that although we need a CB, it's lower priority against other positions. RB, CM x2 (or 3 depending on Pogba), RW, CF/versatile forward, then CB.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would put as priorities (now that Pogba looks like he wants out):

1 Midfield
2 Defence
3 Attack

I think if we can get playing in a way that creates lots of chances, we should be ok, then bring in a top goalscorer next summer. Although hopefully with a better midfield Marcus, Martial and maybe even Sanchez as a back up striker will start to bang them in.

We can't fix every position in one summer but we can establish a nucleus of something better. I hope Ole gets time to do the job required.

I'd be fairly happy with an opening day line of:

DDG(for 12 months)/Henderson/Romero

AWB Maguire/Tuanzebe Lindelof Shaw

McTominay

Tielmans Maddison

Lingard Rashord Martial

with James coming in and out of the attack. It's far, far, far from complete and I get that McT isn't everyone's cup of tea but I think he's worked hard enough to earn a chance (If we are unable to purchase a CDM).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
We may just scrape 9th with that team
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know you're just being miserable today, but that's better than the side we had this season to be fair. Even if it wouldn't be the best summer.

AWB > Young
Maguire > Smalling
McT = Matic
Tielemans > Herrera
Maddison < Pogba (although Maddisson may be better if he actually plays like he gives a damn every week).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly do you honestly believe Leicester would let us buy two of their players and us get Tielemans aswell?
Secondly is it really much better? Pogba is a far better player than Maddison
Herrera is as good as Tielemans who all of a sudden is being massively rated by fans for some reason
Thirdly people are going a bit OTT with McTominay in my view. I think our fans are being blinded by the fact he actually gives a damn which is great to see but talent wise is he really all that? This is a guy who is hardly a dead cert for the Scotland team ffs.
Maguire is better than Smalling but I don’t think there is loads in it. In fact AWB is the only one I will give you but don’t forget I expect all the teams in and around us to strengthen also. If that is the best team we can put out then I’m sorry I expect to be lower than 6th
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No I don't, it was a hypothetical line up by someone other than me which you said would scrape 9th. I think it would actually be somewhat better than what we served up last season, and managed to come 6th. We would have a team without passengers like Young, Matic and Pogba for half the games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah but does it really improve us? I don’t think it does personally.
Plus like I said before I expect all other teams around us bar obviously Chelsea to improve

Indeed, but then we need a striker.

Well, in that scenario Leicester would've lost Maguire, Tielemans and Maddison so they wouldn't improve. You mentioned Chelsea already. Wolves may or may not, depends on signings but they have Europa as well so their squad may be stretched. Unless you think we're getting overtaken by Everton/West Ham/Watford I think we'd still be better than 9th.

Indeed, but then we need a striker.
===============

I know we've had this discussion before but personally I'd have Martial, Rashford and either a youngster (Greenwood) or a left-field signing (Mitrovic?) as back-up option up front and then look to improve both flanks rather than go out and sign a top striker. At least for now.

We need more goals from wider areas and midfield to compensate for not having an out and out ready-made goalscorer, and I feel out playing style would benefit from it.

With all of that said, I think our squad is such a mess and there are so many question marks hanging over the team that it's hard to really know where to start. We must improve the midfield though, because that will help both our defence and attack.

posted on 20/6/19

BK, I don’t mind us signing a striker that can compete with Rashford rather than a big money one. Mitrovic wouldn’t be a bad option, though he similarly could struggle like Lukaku due to his style relying on crosses. I wouldn’t mind Ben Yedder if he was up for the move. This is supposing that Sanchez leaves also. If we are stuck with him we may be forced to rely on him as an option to cover for the wing and through the middle sadly.

Vardy for £30m would be a good addition up front whilst rashford and Martial try and find their shooting boots.

Look at the number of goals he gets for Leicester still

Why would we want the net spend to be so low? We didn't exactly spend huge last summer. We could buy another 2 players at least on that budget

posted on 20/6/19

Bur we have a massive squad, with quite a few players that are going to be given a chance to prove themselves or are difficult to shift. So we aren’t/can’just buy a few more to increase net spend.

I don’t mean just for the sake but I say get as many quality players in as possible this summer.

Not sure the OP’s in/outs strengthen us at all

posted on 20/6/19

But I’ve already told you we have a massive squad. People expecting six or seven in and even more out are being unrealistic. Ole’s already mentioned this numerous times.
