Game changer.

I'm not one for getting giddy over new signings - I've learned my lessons in the past - but the signing of Lawrence Shankland definitely looks like a game changer for United this season. And I for one am ecstatic about this signing.

The thing we lacked more than anything else last season was a goal scorer. Yes, we all loved Safranko's energy and workrate but the reality is he didn't score enough goals, and our goals scored column was embarrassing for a team with a view to winning the league. Signing Shankland, a goal machine over the last two seasons, transforms our attack and makes us much, much more potent.

We just need to hope that Neilson uses a system that gets the best out of him and gives him the chances he needs.

It really is a statement of intent from United though and I'm sure all our rivals in the league are taking note. We mean to go up this year. It's about quality, not quantity.

I'm very happy with our signings so far. Along with Shankland, we've taken Liam Smith from Ayr to give us strength at right back which is a position that desperately needed improved. We've also signed Adrian Sporle from Banfield who I know nothing about but hopefully he'll be an upgrade on what we already have.

So what do we need? Hopefully another midfielder and a wide player. An extra striker would be great too. Still plenty of time though and again it's about quality rather than quantity.

In other news Lee McCulloch has been promoted from strikers coach to assistant head coach.

Pre-season is underway and United played out a draw against East Fife, and will travel up the road to Brechin on Friday for another game, and then we play Dumbarton the day after. Then the real stuff begins with a trip to Tynecastle a week on Friday in the league cup (live on BT Sports I think?).

The Shankland signing has really ramped up my enthusiasm for the new season and I'm looking forward to seeing the team again.

Shankland has shown a distinct lack of ambition.

His manager at Ayr Utd, Iain McCall, told the press the boy was destined for the national team, score all sorts of goals with either foot or head. Sky was the limit.

Where did it all go wrong??

Talk to me about Arbroath's pre-season form. Sensational.

As for Shankland, I forgot to mention it's a three year deal. Obviously the club has sold their vision to him which is great, because previously we didn't have a vision

Arbroath have been impressive in pre-season. Not getting carried away. Yet.

Dundee Utd heavy favourites, which bring its own pressures.

Are you planning on going to a few of the Arbroath games this year? I expect them to start well and they definitely won't do a Brechin.

This is a boy who had a 3 year deal on the table from Swansea back in January.

There's something extremely fishy about this deal and i'm not sure on what side.

We showed him our American dollars and he dropped his knickers.

As my parents are in Arbroath, I try to plan my home visits around the games, so caught a few matches last season. I do fear a long hard campaign ahead, Arbroath might be the only part time team in the division? And, a few olders players in the squad, which is good for experience but it's a slog in winter. Work, train, play, repeat.

Alloa are also part-timers and have an astonishing knack of staying up whilst professional sides go down.
