Come on Ed........

Just need to cough up another £20m cash and you’ve got Maguire in the bag according to reports today. United have apparently offered £60m cash with £20m add ons this week. Leicester want £80m cash and £10m add ons and don’t look like budging

£90m for Harry Maguire.....oh my days.

Ignoring what I think everybody agrees for the moment is the crazy transfer fee this for me could be a very significant signing.

When last season United let the much maligned on here Fellani go they lost the only player who was actually a threat in the air from set pieces which through the season turn draws into wins at critical times.

The current United centre backs are pathetic from corners Smalling especially has a wonderful ability to get under every ball, Maguire will solve the problem both ends of the pitch so this transfer fills a big slab head void we have had since Vidic.

Having had the dubious pleasure of watching Johnny Evans over the years Leicester will miss Maguire I believe more than the fans in here think he gives you a lot of threat as Ole has previously said.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He doesn’t score that many from set pieces really. Not as many as VVD does. He’s very good in the air and is definitely a threat but unfortunately you have to counter balance that against some glaring weaknesses.

He has got no pace. I mean Wes Morgan is quicker. He has no idea of what’s behind him so a ball in behind with pacy strikers and he’s facked. We got caught out with it loads last season.

He’s a good defender, he would improve you but there’s better out there. He’s not a patch on VVD for me
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pace isn’t a major factor though. Some of the best defenders in the world have not been that quick. De Ligt doesn’t look quick, Vidic was never quick, neither was a John Terry, Chiellini, Godin, etc etc. He may well need to sort his positioning out however
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Centre back is a position players can learn with experience so I am sure Maguire if coached correctly which let’s be honest United have been seemingly useless at this past 5/6 years.

Some seemingly top technical when young defenders don’t progress even with great coaching take John Stones as an example with Pep and there was no big clamour for VVD when he left Celtic.

Obviously the Leicester lads on here know best but they don’t have to watch Smalling and Jones every week so despite the money it’s almost impossible for Maguire not to improve us despite the limitations being pointed out in his game
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Smalling is a goid defender. Not sure why he gets lumbered into comments like that to be honest. Yes he is sheite on the ball but he is as good in defence as Maguire

His distribution is shockingly bad which is a key part to the modern game and he isn’t brave like say a Vidic he is mediocrity maybe some come accustomed to it now

Disagree that a defender has to be some ball player. I think Pep has brainwashed so many fans in this country.
Who would you rather have. Chiellini or Stones for example?
As long as my defender can defend first and foremost. Yes we need a top CB however our issue is in CM where we have nobody who can dictate the play like say a carrick or scholes

Dont really rate Maguire as a defender.

There must be a reason he's in demand though, and all I can think is that he must have some leadership quality, which none of our other defenders do. I suspect it's also the reason City were looking at him after the departure of Kompany. And I've always thought if the likes of Lindelof and Bailly had a proper leader next to them rather than Smalling it Jones, it would improve them a lot.

If we are looking at it like that maybe you can see why we were willing to go so high. But still, I just think he is a pretty average defender with the ability to carry the ball out of the defence. The hype around him is ridiculous.

Agree with you entirely about CM a creative fix in this area and a good direct paced right Winger would totally transform the team

But this is the problem, leadership is all well and good but you need to have ability, and he’s sorely lacking in that department. It’s a myth he’s significantly better than what we already have, he’s not he’s actually worse than most of our cb’s.

Yeah, just playing devil's advocate. I completely agree.

Looks like it’s come from The Sun.

He has weaknesses and strengths, but other than in the air, he isn't better than what we have. Smalling a better defender. Lindelof better on the ball and bringing it out. Better positioning as well. Jones? Better injury record. Not much better.

As individual mistakes, stats say we made 8 in total last season. Maguire made 4 by himself.

Our CBs suffers hugely from these two things, lack of leadership and suspect to injury. Our best runs at the back came when we have had the same set starting constantly. Add leadership to that and we will do well. I'd say improve the CM in from and get lucky with injury and we could even finish 3rd.
