£80m for Maguire - never ever thought we would get that, even factoring in the add ons. World record fee for a defender whose defensive stats are roughly the same as Wes Morgan
Thanks Ed!
Thank you Ed Woodward

I think Maguire could work well and I doubt it's a coincedence that Utd are trying to buy a guy that Phelan made captain at Hull. I really dont think this transfer is just about footballing ability but it seems to be constantly overlooked on here.
Yes it's expensive but so what?

I agree with Robbing.

Will Utd be the only all English back four? Not even checked, not that it matters. Wouldnt surprise me if the likes of Rojo and Bailly dont actually speak English though.
Also would not surprise me if Ole is looking to a back three at times and I feel Maguire does his best work left of a three, certainly for England and covers for his pace or lack of it.

As funny as it seems, transfer fees are becoming increasingly meaningless these days with the amount of money in the sport. I remember a time where I thought £8m for a defender was a lot of money, and anything above £30m for anyone was borderline ridiculous. Nowadays those figures are nothing.

If we got Maguire I would imagine the first choice back 4 to be Wan Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof and Shaw.
Will be times that Smalling is in for one of them, and with Young covering for both fullbacks too or even Jones coming in there's no doubt going to be an all English back 4 at some point.

Cant see that Mike as Maguire plays on the left as does Lindelof so I figured he was going with Smalling or a back three.

Nah I still think Maguire would learn to go on the right, or Lindelof.

It’s one of the stranger things about us chasing Maguire IMO; that Lindelof looks our most promising CB for the future, but he plays on the left side (although he is right-footed).
Can’t really see him being benched for Maguire for extended periods, but then £50m+ (or whatever it ends up being if he signs) is a lot of money to spend just to strengthen squad options.
We’d have:
—-Smalling———Maguire
——-Bailly———-Lindelof
-—Tuanzebe———Jones
—————————Rojo
(Although Jones, Tuanzebe and to an extent Smalling can play both sides.)

It's possible but Maguire is left footed so I doubt it will be him. Lindelof then maybe but I think that's probably your best pair on paper anyway. Never rated Smalling tbh.

The problem we have with central defence is too many average players.
We probably need a couple of signings and a couple of departures (Rojo for sure, and one of Jones or Bailly) to pull the squad strength up a level.
