Yeah - if anything, the core problem at the moment feels like the whole system being too buddy-buddy at the moment, with Root picking all his besties and no-one delivering any home truths or giving the players a good rollicking when they play badly. That's the fear I have with Silverman - the players are already far too used to him and too friendly with him and he won't have the authority to really crack the whip and be listened to, the players will think they can just carry on in the lackadaisical manner they have been for years now.

We shall see.

So England won the World Cup by being 'lackadaisical'?

One thing I read on the BBC article is that he's popular with the players and regularly has jokes with the players. That can be an asset but I hope that doesn't hinder him as this group of players need a kick up the @rse more than they need a best mate at the moment.

Something similar to 09 when Flower came in needs to happen.

I agree. I think Moores was similar in that regard, I think a lot of players liked him and got on with him as a mate. Bayliss was pretty open about the fact that players were left to analyse things on their own and think about their mistakes. I don't necessarily think players need a rocket but they need to be able to receive criticism from the coach and realise he's there to get them to win and not be their mate.

I do like Silverwood and think he'll do a decent job but I think Kirsten would have been the better appointment. I look at Essex and as well as Silverwood did with the side in division 2, since we got promoted, a huge part of our success in the last 3 seasons has been down to Simon Harmer and the wining mentality he has brought to the squad.

Perhaps Silverwood can start that process and then bring in Harmer when he becomes eligible next year

The NZ tour is only 2 tests so even if they do, I hope we stick with them.
