HMFC 1 DUFC 1 (Hearts win on pens)

Hearts took the bonus point, and probably deservedly so, but it was a good start to the campaign for United at a tricky place to go, especially in poor weather conditions.

I'm not going to insult anyone's intelligence by pretending we played brilliantly or whatever else. I thought we started brightly enough but then sat back after the goal and to be frank Hearts certainly dominated the remainder of the first half and a great deal of the second. We struggled to move the ball well and we failed to connect our passes and create any meaningful attacks for long periods of the game.

We did defend quite well though and when required Benji in the goal made some good saves. It was also brilliant to see Shankland get off the mark in his competitive debut and hopefully it's the first of many goals.

A wee bit concerned to see Sporle being taken off at half time in his debut. I hope it's not a sign of things to come for the Argentine. On the other side Smith played well enough.

Bouhenna however did not play well and Butcher might have been the better option in this match. We also need another midfielder as Stanton again falls out of the match too often. It'll be interesting to see King in action and hopefully we won't have to wait too long for that.

Plenty to think about for Neilson - especially how he set us up after going a goal ahead - but in terms of result I'm not overly concerned. It gives us a good chance of progressing through the tournament if we can do the business in the remaining games.

We have Stenny away tomorrow night and I expect a very different game and a Dundee United victory.

Nah Ivan, its your to throw away, anyone know what odds on a Celtic/D Utd double both to win their respective leagues?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I would assume relatively short?

We're around 9/4 to win the Championship, with Dundee at 4/1 and Partick at 5/1. Inverness are out at 8/1 and might be a decent outside bet.

You would have to fancy Falkirk to win their division as well. They are staying full time and as limited as someone like Conor Sammon is - he should still score a lot of goals at that level.

I would not fancy that Celtic/Dundee Utd double.

I just think Rangers are too strong this year and Celtic have gone backwards.

Yeah i'm looking forward to it too. Strangely positive about it all and worryingly confident we'll win the league.

It's going to end in tears isn't it?

I think shankland coming in and scoring straight away will be significant.
United have to be favourites. Looking forward to a few trips to tannadice

In Scotland, my picks would be:

Celtic
United
Falkirk
Edinburgh

The only tricky one was Edinburgh - Cove are getting a lot of money on them and may well be very strong.

If anyone can be ersed, could someone work out the odds on that wee bet above, no access to betting sites at work. What would £20 get me if it came in.

About £22.40

No way will United win the league under Neilson. The guy was a fluke wi Hearts. Found oot at MK Dons. Absolute garbage at United. Needs to get shot of the two defensive midfielders. Needs a winger that can cross a ball. Needs a two-pronged strike force.

Better if we just got shot of him altogether.
