League Cup Round Up

So the league cup group stage is complete for another year, so let's go around the groups and see what happened.

Group A

United managed to finish third in a two-horse race after East Fife defeated United and then won the bonus point versus Hearts to finish on 8 points and, thanks to results elsewhere, qualify through to the next round as one of the best second placed teams. Hearts topped the group with 9 points.

Group B

Oh St Johnstone, what is happening here? Another defeat as Forfar put them to the sword and they finish the group with a solitary victory. Ross County won all four games they played to top the group and the Bridie lovers of Forfar finished second with 9 points.

Group C

Hibernian topped the group with comfort and it was Alloa who finished second ahead of Arbroath, who couldn't make the most of their impressive start to the group. It wasn't enough for Alloa though and only Hibs progress.

Group D

It was all to play for in the final match of the group stages, as Dundee managed finally scored a goal and won by a goal to nil against Inverness. Only Dundee progressed. Worth noting that Cove had a handsome victory against Raith on the final weekend. A team to watch out for in League 2.

Group E

A very comfortable section for Motherwell who have started the season in fine form. Morton will be delighted to progress on 8 points.

<Group F

Partick Thistle topped the group and they'll be hoping for a better Championship campaign this time around. Accies also finished undefeated but 2 draws cost them top spot, but both progress.

<Group G

In what looked a tough group, Livingston progressed with comfort on 11 points. Ayr finished ahead of Falkirk but both were tied on 7 points and both won't be in the next round.

Group H

Another group where the Premiership team had a nightmare, this time St Mirren finished third and are out. Albion Rovers will be proud of their second place finish but they didn't accumulate enough points to progress, so only Dunfermline will be in the next round.

Last 16 draw

Celtic v Dunfermline
Dundee v Aberdeen
East Fife v Rangers
Forfar v Livingston
Hibs v Morton
Killie v Hamilton
Motherwell v Hearts
Partick v County

All games to be played on the weekend of Saturday 17 August

Lucky you never finished second they way the draw went

Buzzing pre-season is finished now and we can get into the real football.

Why? We don't have anything to fear from Rangers in cup competitions. History has shown us that.

Also it would have been a good atmosphere at Tannadice since the boycott is probably still in place.

Ultimately we got pumped out by East Fife and they deserve their place. Well done to them.

Dundee currently have the joint best defence in the world at the moment, joint with Motherwell who have also not conceded a goal all season.

Ivan did you watch our game? Are you a bit worried about how good we are?

I was out enjoying the Aberdonian sunshine I'm afraid to say so didn't see it. I'm in training for the kilt walk in a couple of weeks so did a comfortable 8 mile walk since it was nice.

I'm under the impression you played well? I'm a bit concerned that you've peaked too early. And by concerned I mean hopeful.

We played reasonably well. Maybe it is just that we are used to absolute dross so when there is any sort of organisation or attacking play then we get over excited.

I assume it is the Dundee kilt walk? Looks like a decent route. I remember one time I was on top of the Law and could see across to St Andrews so decided to walk from there to St Andrews around the coast. It is rather nice.

Yeah the Dundee one mate. Looking forward to it. My dad and my uncle signed up to it through the Dundee United Community Trust so I thought I'd join them. They both did the fat camp thing (mainly for my uncle who was significantly overweight) so they're doing this now. They're raising money for providing meals at Christmas for families who can't afford it, which is a worthy enough cause. Hopefully the weather is good but not too good.

I think Dundee are like United in that we both maybe lack a bit of creativity? Not sure if that's fair or not.

I like Declan McDaid. He is my type of player. We may be missing wingers though. What I would do to have Javier Artero back. He was amazing. With Nemsadze in the middle. That would work.

You should get climbing the munros Ivan. Great fun. Although I am doing all the hard ones and it makes the easy ones too boring to bother doing.

Wee bit of DU-related news:

Defender Rachid Bouhenna has been reunited with former Dundee United manager Csaba Laszlo after leaving Tannadice for ACS Sepsi [Romania] for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old was brought to United by Laszlo from MC Alger in August 2018 on a two-year deal and became a regular under the Hungarian and then Robbie Neilson, playing a total of 31 games.

Can we please talk about teams that are actually in the league cup? Like Forfar and East Fife and not talk about irrelevant teams?
