VAR/ Offside/ Dead Ball

So what exactly went on tonight?

I was led to believe that if there was any doubt in the offside the linesman was supposed to keep his flag down and let VAR decide after the fact.

He didn't, he raised it and for many it was clear Kevin Friend blew up as Aubameyang went on to score.

On his goal: "I took the ball from Bukayo [Saka]. I was sure I was not offside. I was surprised the referee whistled. I always try to score even if there is a whistle from the referee. I heard the crowd saying it was offside but it was a goal so I was happy."

so if Friend blew then isn't it dead and VAR can't give a goal that was never technically scored?

Ive seen goals ruled out for being offside but not a player carrying on and scoring after a whistle and then VAR giving it?

Anyone slightly more enlightened in VAR can fill me in.

p.s what a dross game neither team deserved to win

Who cares about the offside? It was correctly given in the end.

It’s the penalty shout I don’t understand. Why couldn’t VAR overturn that? Obviously hit his arm, slightly away from his body. Penalty and maybe 2-0.

It’s a rubbish system if it can overturn some decisions but not others.
Just like Martial being fouled vs Palace for another pen turned down. I don’t get it

play went on for like 5 mins and when it stopped the ref just pointed for a sub, there was no review because if there was he would of had to go look at a monitor which he didn't.

why did it also not let him know Xhaka had clearly committed a bookable offense off the ball.

its so inconsistent
----------------------------------------------------------------------

There was a review, the Var team would have decided it wasn’t a clear and obvious error and so allowed play to carry on. That’s happened in multiple games this season already.

Var also isn’t there to point out bookable offences. I think you need to read what it’s remit is on the fa site tbh as there wasn’t anything done differently tonight.

the ball took a clear deflection from his arm.

the ref should then have had to go make the decision himself with replays.

if they did look at it and thought it was nothing then that's a completely different conversation
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That isn’t what they’ve done with any others though as they didn’t seem it a clear and obvious error (remember the high bar they’ve said they’re using this season).

That shouldn’t be something new though unless you haven’t watched many games this season.

I didn’t think it was handball personally - he didn’t move his arm, did he?

Can see why people might disagree but for me it’s clear why the original decision stood.

Me too. From a VAR perspective, I don’t think it would have intervened had it been given or not, I interpreted it the same as you though.

That would have been a harsh penalty his arm was down by his side sure he was slow to pull it out of the way but its by his side and bo movement of arm to ball after a strange bounce up due to deflection from a foot.

Few of us thought the whistle went, if that's the case then the goal shouldn't have stood. Looked like young and de gea stopped for a second too.

Lino should not have flagged. The assistants were poor in last nights game, not just with the goal, but with other decisions too.

Well it is some minor compensation for all the incorrect
descisions against Arsenal at Old Trafford over the years.
