Interesting article in FourFourTwo

https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/tottenham-spurs-mauricio-pochettino-daniel-levy-premier-league-champions-league-missed-chance

Very interesting to see that Spurs are now the fourth oldest team in the Premiership. That stat comes from this (also interesting) article on Sky Sports:

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/11830166/mauricio-pochettino8217s-tottenham-an-ageing-team-that-is-not-pressing

Youngest in the league in Pochettino's first three seasons, then sliding to 3rd, 11th and 16th youngest as the squad's average age has crept further and further up. Across the first three seasons of Pochettino's reign, the squad's average age increased by a hair over a year as he turfed out the old guard and brought in younger players. Across the next three seasons, the average age has gone up by nearly two full years as he's not been able to repeat the trick.

When you think about it, it's a fairly obvious by-product of a lack of turnover in the playing squad, but it does go to so many of Spurs' current issues. Lack of pressing. Slow pace. Complacency.

Levy isn't solely to blame, and the first article probably makes too much of his culpability and too little of Pochettino's. But still. The issues run deep.

In the first couple of years it's going to be young and you expect the age and gel into a team together over a few years. Then they are at their peak. That happened for you a couple of seasons ago.

"Spurs are now the fourth oldest team in the Premiership."

And you have NOTHING to show for it

I think most Spurs fans have bemoaned the lack of squad refreshing over the last few seasons.
Tbf they have tried to bring in youngsters like Davinson Sanchez, Juan Foyth, Oliver Skipp and Kyle Walker Peters, but none have really forced their way into the starting XI yet.

Squad refreshing involves bringing in some players who will go straight into the team or at least offer a serious challenge for a place not just youth expected to break into the team in future because youth players developing into top players is a matter of chance, more or less.

I've watched some of our "old boys" playing for Belgium and I have to say they are playing very well!
In fact Belgium have a very strong side...and I thought their opponents, Kazakstan could probably beat England.
No reason they can't play like this for Spurs....
except of course Spurs don't have such a strong other nine players to put alongside them!

Agreed. My point was that the players you mention isn't squad refreshing IMO.

No, they are youngsters they have tried to get into the team. Sanchez and Foyth are regulars at pretty high standard international teams though.

So you guys should be at the peak of your powers if we're judging the squad by the average age?

28 is peak years for a footballer.
