Let's Not Pretend England...

...doesn't have a racism issue as well.

All the condemnation of the Bulgarian fans just seems a bit ironic(?) not sure if that is the word I should be using here.

There are still a lot of issues in England as well, from the top to the bottom. I hope UEFA do give out a ban, and not a fine. This is not the first time they have been warned about their actions.

UEFA/FIFA/FA as a whole have not done enough on this issue. Paltry fines, silly little banners and adverts, kick it out campaigns. Just a load of BS really. Hasn't stopped anything.

Can’t win with some of these people:

Come out in condemnation of the Bulgarian fans - response is to get your own house in order first

Don’t condemn the Bulgarian fans - response is , how could the FA / Media etc stay silent ?

Which is it ?

The issue is not as black and white as that. If you actually look at it in more detail It's actually more brown and pink.

As others have mentioned, the irony comes from people on your Facebook news feed who have shared things about Nick “he makes some good points Griffin, Nigel “he’s one of us” Farage, and Tommy “he hates paedos but only Muslim paedos” Robinson, then spouting off about last nights racism.

The S*n were condemning last events too, they’ve never let a bit of racism get in the way of their editorial practices in the past, but it’s an issue when someone else does it?

I’m also worried the right-wing press will use last nights events to further smear Eastern European immigrants in the UK, in a “see, this is what they’re all like” type of way.

Bit harsh branding all England fans as racist brexiteers.

What is the point of this article? Come on man...

That's like someone in 1930s England saying "let's not pretend that England doesn't have a fascism problem too" as some whataboutery defence of Hitler just because Mosley and his boys were getting their heads kicked in on Cable Street by Communists and Jews.

I haven't hear monkey chants in a stadium in England in 25 years of going to games.

Bananas have been thrown at black players as recently as last season.

You’re talking bananas whilst the op is talking apples and oranges.

How fruity.

England has gone to great lengths to tackle overt racism, much more than most European nations. In the meantime, however, it has remained knee-deep in an arguably softer but no less bigoted form of xenophobia. There's been too much back-patting on the progress made on racist issues, and a lot of brushing aside of broader xenophobia in which the seeds of racism have lain dormant awaiting the right conditions in which to thrive once again.

The tabloids, with their 'invasion'-type scaremongering and their continuous, low-key stereotyping are the number one culprits, but it's not unknown for the broadsheets to display these attitudes too. All this whilst not forgetting that all of these outlets are not just shaping public opinion, but also pandering to wide audiences who are still strongly prejudiced against those perceived as not belonging to their group.

Daz referred to the right/far-right using these cases of intolerable manifestations of racism in other countries to deflect from their own bigotry, but I'd go further. It's more than mere deflection - it's a way of justifying their own leanings in a "See, we've been right about these stinking foreigners all along" kind of way.
