The Art of defending

Heard a commentator last night saying in modern top flight football, the art of defending seems to have been lost
Looking at the premier now, I can only see Liverpool with a half decent defence, and even then it’s a long way from the champions of yesteryear like arsenal and Liverpool who had rock solid defences, even Jose first Chelsea title win they only conceded 15 goals
Defenders these days are too busy trying to be Franz Beckenbauer, we need to see more Gary Mabbuts or Dawsons, willing to put their body on the line for the team
In our team now, only Toby is a natural defender in my opinion , maybe Dier when he sorts himself out, I don’t know what Winks does but he sure as hell isnt a defensive midfielder

I don't think there's anything wrong with the defending.
ok, for us (Liverpool) we're conceding more than last season, but I think that's mostly down to other teams learning to exploit the gaps our full backs leave.

the problem is no-one's allowed to really tackle anymore. any hint of a touch on the attacker and they hit the deck like a sack of s p uds (no pun intended) and then the ref gives them a free kick.
(and s p uds is a banned word? really? seems like you lot are even more sensitive than the players)

the players, and especially the refs, need to remember that this is a contact sport. not every contact (or appearance of contact, yes. looking at you harry kane) is a foul.

we'd see more effective defending and quite a lot less goals if defenders felt they were allowed to make some proper tackles without being penalised for it.

You should look at Mane and Salah as well to be fair

Got slated on here for saying that your defence would improve when you got rid of that donkey mcguire.

Ive now been proved correct.

At least you're right about something. You're not the only one though, I didn't want him to get back into the team following his sending off at Burnley last season, Soyuncu came in away at Huddersfield and was outstanding. I knew then he was better than Maguire but I was on my own, now pretty much everyone agrees.

Football has always been a cyclical game.

We used to promote a cynical and brutal approach which favoured hatchet men at the expense of creative talent.

Then we gradually switched tastes in favour of attacking players.

But the funny thing is that the tide appears to be turning in favour of defenders thanks to VAR. Quite a few people may have noticed that defenders have started diving/simulating as a last ditch resort in order to have a certain goal

^^ .....ruled out.

Maybe there's been a shift and teams are now focussing more on offensive football whereas previously there was more focus on defensive aspects of the game.

These things happen in cycles.

"Art of defending"??
Didn't the Italians take that to the limit of total boredom a few years ago?
