Happy New Year one and all. I hope you all had a very enjoyable festive period.
It's over now though. Back to work. Back to sitting in our hideous offices, surrounded by boring old boots who have little to say and even less worth listening to.
Thankfully it'll all be over soon if events in Iran overnight are anything to go by, never mind the climate crisis that is threatening to engulf the planet. I'm sure the incoming nuclear war will help escalate the climate destruction we're facing.
Anyway, it's a week late but I thought I'd post an article on the game last week.
I thought we were garbage to be honest and it wasn't a good performance from United in the slightest. I thought the early goal would set us up for another dominant and commanding win but sadly it wasn't to be. For me Dundee edged the game and probably felt they should win, whereas we were happy to take the point and move on.
What was worrying was the lack of options on the bench. We lost Stanton before the game and Pawlett is still injured, and we really didn't have anyone to turn to beyond that (especially since Cammy Smith is clearly not in the plans).
We do have a couple coming back into the squad this window. Declan Glass returns from a successful loan spell at Cove and I'm excited to see what he can offer. Less excitingly, Osman Sow returns from an unsuccessful spell at Killie where he was constantly injured (as usual). I expect the former to feature regularly, the latter less so.
Back to the game though, there really weren't many chances in the match and I suppose that's a pleasing aspect in that we played poorly but restricted their opportunities. Our defence has been very good this season, although I am often critical of their distribution which again was poor in the game on the 27th.
I also thought it was interesting the way they had half a dozen players lying on the turf at full time. They gave everything and only got a draw. I wonder if this result, much heralded by fans and local press alike, is something of a false dawn for them. Time will tell. Ultimately for us it was a point gained as all the results went for us at the weekend.
A couple of comments on things around the game. I thought our displays before the game were quite nice. Both banners at either end looked good, especially the one hanging from the shed. Less good was the video doing the rounds that seemed to show someone shouting racist abuse at Kane Hemmings. I don't think the video was as clear as I'd have liked, but for me it sounded like he called him a black bassa and I was pleased that United immediately released a statement saying they were investigating. A ban will hopefully be forthcoming and a chap on the door from the police too. I've no time for racism and it's not welcome at Tannadice, football or in society in general.
Next up is QOTS away on Saturday, which you would assume should be a good chance to get back to winning ways until you remember they pumped us 4-0 down there last time. Assuming a nuclear apocalypse doesn't happen before then.

It was good but went too fast
Just up visiting family
Ate and drank too much

Nothing exciting just some whisky and some lynx
Went out watched the fireworks mainly had a quiet one
Good to be back at work eh (sarcastic voice)

I've only had that conversation three times so far which I think is a good start to the day.
Although half the office aren't back until Monday, and then I'll be down in the Dundee office on Tuesday, so I'm comfortably expecting to hit at least 20 conversations of that nature.

Apparently so. Although it is in a hospital.

Happy New Year, Ivan! Pleased to report that I’m not back at work until Tuesday...!
Disappointed with the derby to be honest. Pal of mine was trying to say we would’ve taken a draw before it - not for me - won nine on the bounce, should be aiming for ten, but there you go. Agree though that we’ve gone from having what looks like a really strong squad to suddenly having no options on the bench. Thought Sporle looked ok when he came on, wonder if they’ll play him in Butcher’s position for the match he’s suspended for (Partick I think), he looks solid enough.

Yeah I found it disappointing too. We just never got going at all and I can't remember any real chances we created. Too much hoofing it up the park and dare I say McPake got his tactics spot on. We ended up having Harkes more advanced than Clark for much of the match which was very strange.
Sporle I like and I think the language thing is a very odd reason not to play him. I think he'll bring in King though for that midfield spot.
Rumours that we're brining in another American midfielder in this window too.

Dillon Powers, apparently. Thought Harkes started well before he was just about knocked out by an elbow...
