Mbappe 40m euros

“This crisis will clean up the irrationality of professional sport. It’s like there was a nuclear attack and it had to be rebuilt, but on other grounds," Cohn-Bendit told French newspaper Ouest-France.

“Tomorrow, Mbappe will cost at most €35-40m and no longer €200m. And who can buy him?

“There will be de facto regulation. Going even further on a salary cap could be necessary. It is a reorganisation that goes not only through the players' salaries, but also through the right to images and publicity.

“We have to break the system of managers, of those who do business."

Cohn-Bendit believes these sweeping changes would improve sport and help it return to its core values ahead of the Tokyo Olympics - which have been postponed until next summer - and the Paris games in 2024.

“A little more sobriety is enough for me," he added. “A little more sobriety and a little more equality would be a good start. Footballers will not play worse if they are paid less."

Salary caps are much needed, I'm sure all clubs would welcome them as it will only put an end to incredible wages.

However, unless it's adopted worldwide, nothing stopping players performing stints in China, Qatar or the U.S to earn obscene wages.

honestly I think as long as all the major European leagues were on board we'd be fine.

players by and large are egotistical and want to play for premier clubs in premier competitions.

today they could all go to china for silly money and only the second tier or twilight players are taking it up.

clubs would be all for it because their revenue will stay the same but profits would go through the roof if wage bills were reduced.

They wouldn’t because you’d take away their competitive edge, by limiting their spending, and their ability to grow commercially, and competitively, at a faster rate by bringing in players on bigger wages.

you need a majority to pass things; the majority benefit not the few with a cap

The Glazer's would never agree. They're only interested in themselves making as much profit as they can

So they wouldn't support rules that would save them money?

Salary caps work well in singular environments. In the US it works because nobody else plays their sports at their level.

Rugby is predominantly an international sport so they control their players and keep the market singular by taking away your right to play for the National team if you go abroad. So the cap works (albeit at a fraction of the salaries).

Managing a worldwide football salary cap would be an impossible job imo. And if you didn’t do it on a global scale then you’d have players chasing the money - basically China of 3 or 4 years ago but to a much, much greater extent.

You'll still get a few chasing the money, but most will want to play in Europe. As they do now. And so what if a few of the top players chase the money? Would it ruin anyone's enjoyment of the game?

It’s their money; they can spend it on whatever they want as far as I’m concerned.

The majority wouldn’t vote for it. You’re deluded if you think they would.
