"Sporting merit"

Morning all,

I see UEFA has provided guidance to domestic leagues about how they should determine final placings if the pandemic means it is not possible to finish this season.

In this instance, according to the Guardian, UEFA requests that submissions for 2021-22 European competitions should be “based on sporting merit", determining final placings “on objective, transparent and non-discriminatory principles".

Interested to hear your thoughts on what you think will happen and, if the season can't be finished, what this new guidance might mean for our European competition chances next season.

The specific circumstances of England are Liverpool 25 points clear so perhaps that will be considered over here.

Still waiting to revert to last season now?

Idiot

What do you aim to achieve by positing that link? What's you're point? You just proved me right

They've used sporting merit from this season to the letter which just proves me right.

Ajax and Alkmaar tied on equal points at top of table so no champion.

This is in keeping with UEFA guidelines

"National Associations and Leagues, should otherwise have the ability to decide the final positions in their domestic competitions, having regard to the specific circumstances of each competition;"

They've complied to the letter and made a decision that is suitable to their circumstances based on this season which is what UEFA said.

You're fighting a lost cause here mate.

I got that wrong.

I 100% agree with ending the season.
I also 100% disagree with how the Dutch state they have allocated European places.
Weirdly though, I 100% agree with who they have chosen, with 1st place in the last completed season (19/19) entering next season's Champions League and 2nd,3rd,4th (18/19) entering the Europa League.

You've also managed to get that wrong. Probably best to give up.

Did I?

Who finished 1,2,3,4 in 2018/19?
Who is entered for the 2020/21?

AZ finished fourth in 2018/19. The Dutch league has chosen them to enter the CL next season. They were in the EL last season.

Or this season, should I say.

"Well done to the Dutch for making the fairest, most transparent and easiest to administer decision."
