JA Desert Island Discs

Given sticking everyone on separate desert islands appears to be the only way to get people to adhere to social distancing guidelines, this seems kind of appropriate right now.

You get to choose...

8 albums: which you can play on the Sony Walkman you're washed up on the shore with.

One book: for which a bookmark will be provided (knowing how many here love bookmarking things).

One luxury item: which must be of no use in escaping the island or communicating outside of it.

On your island you will also find a copy of The complete works of Shakespeare as well as The Bible (or other appropriate religious or philosophical work).

Which of these would you be more likely to read first, if at all?

Can't beat a game of golf, as long as the weather is decent. Even if ya play rubbish there's always the 19th hole to make you forget about it.

Not sure there is a "19th hole" on a deserted island.

Playing golf on a desert island

Few gems in your album selection Chuck

OK Computer - Radiohead
Automatic for the People - R.E.M.
The Lie of the Land - Show of Hands
Gulag Orkestar - Beirut
The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Nevermind - Nirvana
Everything Must Go - Manic Street Preachers
Mezzanine - Massive Attack

The book's a difficult one. However great a single novel might be, I'd feel pretty restricted just having the same one to revisit, so I'd go for poetry. If an anthology of different writers is cheating, I'd take Philip Larkin's Selected Poems.

I've probably read about a third of Shakespeare's plays, so I've got a head start on that. I'd read the ones I don't know and then revisit the best ones. When I could recite all parts of Macbeth, King Lear and Henry V verbatim, I might give the Bible a lash.

The luxury item would be an acoustic guitar, without which I'd be lost.

That’s what happens when you make three comments on an article, not one of which refers to the OP.

I'm used to playing from the trees and beach. Not a problem.

Strike that: luxury item, gigantic (1 tonne) bag of weed.

bad choice, would be gone far too quickly...

should have chosen a tonne of live plants, then you could cultivate them and grow an unlimited amount...
