Buying British

After signing some of the top talent in Europe with werner and ziyech it looks like Frank's looking abit closer to home to solve our defensive problems. First off I think signing premier league experience especially defensive experience is a good idea. The Premier league isn't like any other league and knowing you have players who are up to the job is a good idea. The down side of this is they're all subject to inflated transfer fees.

Nick Pope - good age, good goal keeper, English and has a couple of seasons experience in the prem. I think the down side of this one is the potential transfer fee, seen prices of 40 and 50 mil quoted which for a keeper is alot of money.

Ben Foster - vastly experienced, safe pair of hands, a commanding presence, settled in the area, wouldn't cost alot of money you would imagine and a good stop gap for a couple of years.

John stones - plenty of experience but still only young, many will have written him off but the potential is there for all to see. If the 20mil fee quoted is correct I'd snap city's hand off, I think he's actually suffered under pep for trying to be too much off a ball playing defender. Get him in, get him next to a solid ball winner and watch him go.

Lewis dunk - big, stong and vocal. Great in the air, can lead a defence, and throws his body on the line. Chelsea fan and you know he's going to give 110 percent every week, while not the most glamorous signing in the world he's just what we need. Someone to whip our defence into shape.

Ben Chilwell, - massive transfer fee, and not the most exciting left back in the world but I see this as a sort of Wayne bridge signing, good enough in all departments and dependable. I'm not taking his 2nd half of the season form as too much of a concern, the entire team dropped off and something wasn't right, it wasn't solely down to him.

I think VVD at Southampton showed a clear difference in quality than Lewis Dunk has. It’s kind of what I mean, not just going for any player that is ‘commanding’, we need quality to go with it.

I remember making a case for going for VVD 5 years ago when he was still at Celtic and everyone laughed at me!

Who's laughing now!

Brummie I remember it well. Most were questioning why we should get a player who so far had only been good enough in the SPL. Very similar not good enough comments to those who are turning their nose up to Dunk now.

I was speaking positively about VVD on the article you’re talking about, when he was still at Celtic. The situations aren’t comparable considering the prices quoted, the age and stage of careers they’re at and what they’re being signed for.

And the actual quality. As said, VVD at Southampton was just of better quality than Lewis Dunk. Just think we should be prioritising a CB signing (to be a first team starter) on more than just being a commanding presence.

BK if you were speaking positively about us signing VVD while he was at Celtic then you were definitely in a minority.

As for comparing VVD to Dunk in terms of quality then of course VVD comes out on top. Nobody is disputing that, he's the best CB in the world by a mile.

Chelsea signing Dunk would be more comparable to Liverpool signing Stewart Downing than Liverpool (or Southampton) signing Van Dijk.

Fingers crossed if Dunk is signed it's on the same day as Havertz, that way the 'snobs' like me are too busy in afterglow to notice

This sounds near identical to some of the negative comments on Brummie's Van Dijk article from five years ago when we were linked with Van Dijk at Celtic. Here's a sample of them:

- "Had to double check which board this was on, was expecting it to be on the Burnley or Sheffield Wednesday board. Are you having a fecking laugh, VVD for Chelsea to replace Terry. What next, Peter Bonetti to replace Cech"

- "Should we really shop in the discount section for a replacement for Terry?"

- "Leave it out Brummie. Saints would be a good level for him. Just shipped four against Malmo, I'd rather get Diick"

- "FFS Virgil Van Dyk for Christ sake, hes a good replacement for stones at EVERTON not chelsea class"

You can find comments like that about any mid/lower table player we are/were linked with. Not all of them turned out like VVD.

I can't remember what I thought of us signing VVD from Celtic, didn't post on that Brummie article (just checked). I do remember thinking we should entertain the rumor of the VVD/Christensen swap in 2017 & I along with CMF was one of his biggest admirers back then - I recall CMF shooting me down at least once about that lol

Interesting to think what might've happened with that one. I actually think Christensen would've been better off if it did, probably become a City player by now/a PL champion.

You'd be mad to pay 50 million for Chilwell, good player but certainly not at that price. Take Tierney for Arsenal he seems a better player to me and he was half the price.
