ALBERT QUIXALL 1933-2020 RIP

Albert Quixall was an English former professional footballer who played as an inside-forward. Born in Sheffield, he started his career with Wednesday, signing as an amateur in 1948 and turning professional in 1950. He made his debut in February 1951 as a 17-year-old centre forward and went on to play almost 250 League games, scoring 66 League and Cup goals with the Owls. He was in his prime with Sheffield Wednesday, and gained much media attention, becoming the Golden Boy of British football.

He joined Manchester United in September 1958 for a then British record fee of £45,000. He was capped five times for England in 1954 and 1955 made schoolboy, Under-23 and 'B' appearances for his country, and played for a Football League representative side on four occasions.

"Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of club legend Albert Quixall. Our thoughts are with Albert’s family and friends at this difficult time."

RIP ‘Golden Boy’ - Another Owl Flying High. 💙💙

I remember when Quixall left Wednesday for United.

I remember him very well. He was a tidy player for us, but not exceptionnel. I always thought, with no evidence, that the fee and expectations were too much for him. A nice lad I thought.

Before I was born Sandy, but my Dad was a huge fan of his. He said he really was a "golden boy".

He was the epitome of a modern young footballer at that time - had blond hair and a huge quiff like a Teddy Boy and turned his shorts over at the waist to reveal his legs, at a time when most footballers were wearing them down to the knees and baggy !!!

It seems as if Wednesday had the best of him

There must be more who remembered him. He played when we won the cup in 63, with Bobby and Denis in the side.
