The Christmas Rules

Will you be taking advantage of the break in restrictions or not?

posted on 16/12/20

No be ause oddly enough I'm an adult and make responsible decisions for myself, family and those I care about. This country needs to grow up, we've never had it easier to see and speak to family all over the world.

Seems a large part of the country waits about to be told what they can and can't do and relies on mummy Boris. Have a friend who hadn't seen his mum for a few months and they all had a little get together because they had 'followed the rules for a long time'.

Both parents, 2 of his sisters and both nieces tested positive this week and of course everyone is pouring out the well wishes like it wasn't a completely avoidable situation. Obviously I hope nothing bad comes of it but it could have been completely avoided.

Plenty of previous generations and people across the world to this day have to ensure far worse conditions than lockdown in 2020. No, I'll be seeing and speaking to everyone I know through the many means we have readily available to do so. I lived abroad for 4 years and didn't see any family from this country in that time, I'm quite OK to manage a few more months.

Unfortunately whilst the masses lap up this nonsensicle lunacy from the government, it’s unlikely to stop for a good duration.

In a real pandemic, these conversations wouldn’t even be happening

As someone who has seen someone close die from covid, basically her lungs filling with fluid and drowning her from the inside out, i think i'll do the sensible thing and avoid visiting people.

i'll spend it with my wife and kids and have a fab day with them instead

Spending Christmas period with wife and family mainly. Father in law comes over on Christmas day as he’s living alone. That’s it. My wife has seen enough on the hospital wards to take any unnecessary risks.

So, just to confirm, your message is that people are sheep and should exercise personal responsibility but at the same time follow what the government recommends?

Granted, we do have it materially easier in this country in 2020 than a lot of people throughout the world, but part of the social contract, to me, is that we work most of our lives so that we can enjoy a few remaining freedoms and luxuries the rest of the time.
I work in an industry that can't exist if people work from home and I have been at work as normal all year - no one cares about you unless you work for the NHS. I can completely see why people in the same boat as me are going to make the most of Christmas and enjoy themselves. People are craving actual, real human contact - not sterile Zoom calls.

It seems a hell of a lot of people in this country are happy for the working class to mix with others, as long as it's only when they're bringing Just Eat deliveries, delivering your weekly shop, and bringing your Christmas shopping from Amazon.
