New contract for Greenwood

Until 2025 with the option of an extra year.

He hasn’t had the best of seasons so far but it’s expected that young players will have a drop off. He’s the most exciting prospect I’ve seen at United in a while and I include Rashford in that.

There’s been signs lately that he’s improving again and I feel he’s actually been treated harshly by Ole lately seeing less game time than Martial and Rashford despite playing far better than both in recent weeks.

Classic United, always rewarding poor form.

Just because he hasn't been scoring doesn't mean he hasn't been playing well. Last 3 or 4 games he has looked very good

wonder how much per week they have put him on with his new contract?

We should have just let his contract run down so he could be picked up on the cheap by one of the many clubs that would have been interested.

Good news. Hopefully he can pick up a bit of form, we need him to start scoring goals again.

rosso, on his position I think it’s something the club view him as in the future (a number 9) but he still needs to develop other facets of his game wherever he’s going to play.

One of the things with academy players (and I know this is something the United academy is very big on) is that they’re trained in multiple positions, they’ll not find their niche until they’ve played plenty at senior level. And even then, some may not find that and will be versatile players in the squad.

It’s been a similar story with Rashford, Greenwood has plenty of time to find a position in the team in the future.

With his build (which may change a little in bulk at least, in time, granted), passing and feet, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he made a career as a wing forward, by yeah, it’s still very, very early for him.

McT is probably the very best example of what you’re talking about. He played absolutely everywhere coming through the ranks from CB to number nine and everywhere in between, and I think you can see in his game that he benefitted from it greatly.

The Academy coaches have done similar things (not quite to the same extent, but not far off) with Garner and Levitt, and I think it says quite a bit about how they value those two as well.

So much will depend on how he develops, what managers we have and what tactical shifts there may be over the coming decade. At this stage I don’t think he can be pigeonholed as a number 9. It’s my understanding that he’d only player as a striker for a couple of years before he made it to the first team anyway - he was an attacking midfielder before that apparently. Similar story with Rashford. And Rashford’s still a player that could still have a position change over the coming years.

Tactical shifts is a good point and one I was thinking about too, for us and more widely in the game.

The false nine obviously affords the opportunity for players with builds and attributes like Messi, Fekir and Foden to play as the central striker. It’s back in fashion to some degree again, and would be a more obvious central position for Greenwood than your traditional apex nine role.

But, for now, and happily, Bruno exists

False 9. Hate the name.

If that’s the way things go you’d likely see Greenwood playing wider. When you have that kind of finishing ability he needs to be in the box. Central or wide, it’ll still be the best way for him to have success as a forward.

That isn’t the way things will go under this manager, I’ll tell you that for free

I think Greenwood will be spending the majority of his time wide for now and the foreseeable future.

Eventually things might change. But there are very, very few successful out-and-out nines with Greenwood’s kind of physique playing at the top level in the top leagues. He’ll need to bulk up, or the game will have to change.

In fact, I can’t think of one. Calvert-Lewin might be the closest I can think of, and I think he probably has at least a few inches on Mason.

Jesus is not a dissimilar build.

I’m not talking about this manager, I mean more if the tactical shift is towards a striker that is more withdrawn than the wide players (I’m not calling them false nines you can fack off).

He needs to bulk up and develop his game wherever he’s going to play. At 19 I’m not really going to make proclamations about his future role, and position, as it’s not something you can do right now.

Top footballers are adaptable and will eventually find a place that they’ll excel. If he becomes a top footballer he could play anywhere across the front line.
