So, with the departure of Toby, who do Spurs fans consider to be the best centre back partnership of all time:
1.Phil Beal & Mike England
2. Graham Roberts & Paul Miller
3. Richard Gough & Gary Mabbutt
4. Ledley King & Jonathan Woodgate
5. Toby Alderwierld & Jan Vertonghen
Some excellent partnerships here... I can’t really include the double winning team, as they only played with one true centre back, Maurice Norman...
I think that we can all agree that Ledley King, is the best we’ve ever had... But I was also very impressed with Graham Roberts & Richard Gough...
Best Spurs Centre Back Partnership

Ledley was sheer class, but for me Roberts and Miller.
They just fought for everything.
Roberts was an absolute monster, who was ( and still is ) Spurs through and through.
That pair won two FA Cups and one Uefa Cup in the space of 4 years.
Could any of our current CB's get anywhere near that. Blimey, they can't even achieve basic defending.

Didn't we have the best defensive record for 2 seasons in a row with Jan+Toby?
With Walker and Rose beside them, a brilliant Dier and Dembélé in front, it was the most solid team we've had for years.
And still won fack all

In the time i've supported spurs, I would say Ledley is the best we've had, Toby and Jan were great for a few seasons but Ledley was a different gravy in my opinion.

Similar to my thinking, Toby and Jan played with great guile for CBs. Although when I started supporting Spurs, I loved Gary Mabbutt. At one point like many, I also loved Sol. Ledley helped me heal!

Always thought Ledley was a little overrated because of what he meant to the club more than the player he was. He was very very good but I don’t think he ever performed to the level or consistency that Alderweireld did.

It’s not that often that we’ve had great partnerships... But Toby & Jan... & King & Woodgate were both superb...
I never saw England & Beal, but we won trophies with them... so must have been decent...
Roberts & Miller were both as hard as nails... Roberts was just superb... he was a leader.. he had a significant input into the 3 finals we won...I absolutely worshipped him as a kid... he was completely shafted by David Pleat at the end... He phoned Roberts up at 6am, the morning of a match, to tell him that he wasn’t playing & he was to be sold to Chelsea... Roberts was playing superb at the time, alongside Richard Gough... Pleat told him that he never rated him!!
The Spurs side of the early 80’s ... was the best I’ve seen in my lifetime... in my opinion, better than the side 3 years ago!!

Steve F.... you’re right about him being an absolute monster...
In the 81 cup final... he dived to head the ball clear from our penalty area... unfortunately Chris Hughton tried to boot the ball clear... in doing so he removed Robert’s front 2 teeth... Roberts was covered in blood... at half time he was advised not to continue... Roberts just took some painkillers & continued!!!
In the 82 cup final, he won us the winning penalty, with that barnstorming run, from his own half...
In the 84 uefa cup final, he launched himself at the ball to force it home, among flying kicks etc... he gave one of the greatest, individual performances I’ve ever seen... he was truly inspirational!!! 👏

Did you ever see him play?
If you did you would not be saying that.
Toby is/was very good.
Ledley king was an all time great.
Watch some of the video clips of his run backs.

Ledley could play alongside anyone and make them look good. Like Ted said, he's one of the greats.

I enjoyed watching the early eighties side, built from the ruins of relegation just a few years earlier, and there were some real winners in that side.
