Nothing to do with football

But neither is cricket.
It's a question for the Brains Trust.
Jimi Hendrix is often described as the best guitarist in the world.
Is this just in rock music?
I ask because I'm just watching some Spanish music with a great guitarist. Then there are classical guitarists. In fact a few styles.
So, does anybody know?

Australian culture I suppose !
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We gave the world INXS, AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Nick Cave, Pendulum, Art vs Science and Silverchair.

Our seat at the table of culture is assured 😎
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And Kylie
----------------------------------------------------------------------

She’s finally moving back home too 😊 One too many terrible English winters I guess (though I doubt she struggled to pay heating in a two up two down)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On guitarists not read all replies but surely Randy Rhoades has been mentioned.

She's not really mate she's actually moving to Dublin to join my menage a trois with Susanna Hoff's
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I bet after you’re finished with her she walks like an Egyptian…
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Any upcoming concerts?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nah, we’re separated from the world for a while yet. Hopefully Download 2023 will be a thing and we can get all the legends back. There might be some local bands to see but aiming to spend all my monies in 2023 to make up for it. You?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have Metallica in Florence in June and am in the process of purchasing tickets for WASP in Dublin next march 🤘🎸
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Metallica thing sounds fabulous... I watched their collaboration with the San Francisco philharmonic on sky arts not long ago...superb
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They also done similar 20 years ago.
I've seen them 25 times in 12 countries
----------------------------------------------------------------------
300 times?

Wow, that’s commitment

Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani, Prince and my mate Rob were/are pretty good.

As a bassist I’d like to give a shout to Steve Harris too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If we're talking bass players, then Jaco Pastorius. John Paul Jones. Pino Palladino. Plenty of great ones in that instrument pool as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Entwistle should be included.

I have been fortunate to see some of the rock worlds greatest in no order of who I think is best.

Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Andy Latimer, Mark Knopfler, Alex Leifson, Steve Howe, Michael Schenker and his brother Rudolph, Steve Rothery, Steve Hacket, Nick Barrett, Lindsay Buckingham, Richie Blackmore, Andy Powell, Van Halen, Angus and Malcom Young, Mike Box and John Lees.

Ones I have somehow managed to miss, Clapton, Neil Young, Steven Wilson.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Add Jesse Ed Davis to that list.

There was an old band called 'Babe Ruth' that had an absolutely unreal guitarist, dunno if anyone else has come across them?

Shaklock.<so> loved The Mexican song.
Great solo guitar break.

Harry Manx is an interesting chap. Plays guitar and mohan veena. strange mix of Indian music and blues.
Something different.

As has been said, there are countless bedroom-based YouTubers and tone demo guys who can do things Hendrix et al couldn’t with a guitar and who are, objectively, better technically. When we talk about ‘the greatest’ it’s not just skill but influence, originality and becoming iconic.

I’ve been enjoying trying to play some Mark Knopfler of late. His playing is so expressive and dynamic - those little stutters and ghost-notes that add so much - and the way he lets the guitar echo the lyrics or carry on the string is just magical.

Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead always deserves a mention in discussions like this, I think. So, so inventive, from angsty distortion like Paranoid Android to transcendent, spaced-out beauty like Sail to the Moon.
