Yes it is. Pretty much every team we play has either three or four in midfield. It is why teams cut through us with total ease.

You make a good point (about classic VC too). As you say, two in midfield can work. In fact two good midfielders are always preferable to three average ones. Put Rice and Bissouma in our two man midfield and we’d be so much better.

I'm not sure what Simeone is doing these days but he had his teams reaching CL finals and competing (& winning!) La Liga's with a 4-4-2.

4-2-3-1 is on of the most commonly used systems in the game. But all systems have to have the players doing the right things within it.

Can you still work out what it should have read or not?

We should be playing 3 in midfield. Even with better personnel we would have to make additional changes in other areas to make it work.

But the level of players that we have in midfield is so far off the level needed.

The point VC, is that if you're going to try and accuse others of writing BS, (which you hadn't even read, apparently), it helps to be a little more accurate yourself.

What I can't work out is why you didn't just respond to me initially like a normal person. I wasn't attacking you, I was *attempting* to discuss what you were saying. I know doing anything more than angrily grunting through the keyboard is a challenge for you, but I'm sure there's more to you than that.

The point VC, is that if you're going to try and accuse others of writing BS,

I'd like to see us play 4-3-3/4-5-1 as well, personally. But it doesn't matter what formation you play if you've got players who can't or won't put in the hard yards.

Simeone's teams are some of the hardest working, dogged teams around and most of his success has come in a 4-4-2.

Hargreaves, Scholes and Carrick very rarely played as a three. Usually Hargreaves would operate from the sides and we'd operate a sort of lopsided 4-4-2 (I've seen it called the 4-6-0 as well).

Ditto Keane & Scholes - that worked because we had two of the most tireless wide midfielders in Beckham & Giggs. It was a fully functioning, hard working unit. It wasn't about individuals (though more talented ones certainly help!).

If you dropped Keane & Scholes into our team tomorrow, whilst I'm sure we'd look better in many ways, they'd still be left isolated whilst our wide players fail to track or work hard off the ball and whilst Bruno runs about headlessly.

VC often trails an error by doubling down on his vitriol.

a 2 man midfield not only require 2 top cms but players around them that work hard enough so that they are not outnumbered

football is simple. It is about creating overload by playing 2 vs 3 in midfield you are already given the oppo the overload advantage in the most crucial area of the pitch. And that is before we talk about the quality of the cms

utd struggled for many years in the UCL because of being overrun in midfield in the early 2000s.

when a lot of epl club like transitioned to 3 man midfield utd were able to match them because rooney the number 10, worked extremely hard defensively too so we were never outnumbered in midfield.
