In the summer of 2013, following the departure of SAF and Gill, United were faced with a transfer request from their captain, Wayne Rooney. Not wishing to lose a third key figure, Moyes put all his efforts into keeping Wazza. That focus contributed to a disastrous transfer window, with Fellaini being the only acquisition.
Rooney continued to provide some great moments for a few more years and his efforts weren't questioned but his best years were behind him and, especially in the 2013/2014 season, he missed a lot of games through injury.
I wonder how events might have unfolded if Moyes had simply let Rooney go and acquired a replacement.
Parallels between then and now are tenuous - I mean the team was in slightly better shape then but I can't help thinking that United should just accept that the Ronaldo thing is over (it's only one more year anyway) and get on with it. Ronaldo #2 tried his hardest and gave us most of our few wonderful moments but we need to move forward.

We should have let Rooney go back then. He was already in decline and SAF was planning on moving him on by some accounts.
We should also let Ronaldo go.

SAF gave Moyes a gift that Summer in stating Rooney wanted to leave.
Rooney leaves = not Moyes fault.
Rooney stays = Moyes keeps Rooney.
Hindsight though tells us we'd probably have been better off letting him go then.

I wanted Rooney sold but it was a thought decision for a new manager coming in where his every decision was already being scrutinised by the media.
