I strongly feel managers should never "single" out individual players for criticism in public. Its a team game and a utd image should be kept in public
Having said this, it always grates me when a manager paints a narrative of everything is working well behind the scenes. I know it contradicts my earlier point of keeping a utd image, but I jus cannot help it.
I loved Ralf Ragnick for his brutal honesty about what needed sorting #open heart surgery. One of the many reasons I couldn't stand ole waa his YES Man image.
Watching ETH k trying to paint an image of the team working together as a team to fix the issues makes me happy. But hearing him imply that he is receiving the support also annoys me.
What are your thoughts on managers being brutally honest vs being diplomatic?
Brutal honesty Vs Diplomatc managers

It's situation dependent. Got a problem with specific players or an issue with the board? Definitely be diplomatic. You're only undermining yourself by going public.
If there's something really obvious everyone knows about (terrible ref decision, run of form, injury crisis etc) you're better off being honest or at least close as you can, as you're not kidding anyone.
It must be so difficult with the pressure to win football matches and be a politician but that's the job these days.

Ragnick had nothing to lose.
ETH will be hoping to be in the jobs for 3 years or even longer. If he came in all guns blazing, calling out the directors, players, fans, staff, he would last about as long as Ralf did.

"Speak softly and carry a big stick"- (T Roosevelt ) is one of my favourites.
So far he's soft on speech, but where's his stick?

Brutal honesty
Nothing to do with Ralf or ETH.... But Lou will likely not be invited back on mutv

Whichever way is right (and it’s probably a balance of the 2) the fact is that players these days have far too much power and can down tools far too easily without being accountable.
EtH is in a new job and it’s clear his job for now is to create some kind of harmony and get the players on his side. It would be very foolish and naive if he came out and moaned about the players who we know should be doing far more.

……
Why not take him at face value?

No, he was the manager

However, a manager's job isn't to point out what a team's problems are to the public, otherwise they may as well be a pundit.
Their job to a manage what they have, and point out what they need to the owners.

This, really. It’s why a lot of post-match interviews are largely pointless. What the manager says to the interviewer and what he’ll say in the dressing room are totally different things.

Tbf Ten Hag has repeatedly made it clear that he wants more signing and that he'd have preferred business to be done earlier, ideally. Without crossing the line into recklessness and stupidity, I don't think he could say much more

Reading these quotes, I think he's spoken very well on the issue of transfers tbh. He's put the pressure on to get players in through the door, whilst reiterating that they must actually strengthen the squad.
