5 Subs

Good Morning. Another couple of comfortable wins for the OF at the weekend and the gap between us and the rest remains massive.

This season just feels like the gap between us and even the bigger clubs in the league is bigger than it has ever been and the standard amongst the rest is the poorest I can remember.

Some of the more sensitive Celtic fans might think thats me downplaying their results so I'll focus on Rangers and say that knowing a very average Rangers team - in fact one we keep suggesting needs a massive rebuild - has now only lost 2 league games outside OF games since the COVID break in March 2020. That's a pretty staggering record given the number of average performances we have had over the last 3 years and both defeats were by a single goal. We're also likely this season to end up on more or similar points as the treble winning side of 20 years ago featuring the likes of De Boer, Ferguson, Arteta, Amoruso etc.

Celtic's record is perhaps patchier for different reasons but since clicking under Ange Postecoglou have now only lost 1 game in 18 months in the league. In essence over the past 2 seasons I think between the OF we have lost only 3 games to the rest in the league.

One of the factors that has changed in recent years is the introduction of 5 subs.

For the OF I see it as a huge advantage. Take Saturday at Ibrox. 2-2 with 20 to play and we bring on 4 internationals. Nearly half the outfield line up is changed and freshened up. St Mirren by limitation of options either keep the same tiring group who have been chasing for so long or freshen up and create a big gulf in quality for the last part of the game.

It's been that way for a while and must be disheartening for opposition Managers and fans to see you have held them for so long and with 20/30 mins to play they change half the team without a huge impact on quality. For other teams to get a result they say we need to be below par and they need to be at the top of their game. However if we are below par we can now literally change half the team - the chances of 16 players being below par is probably pretty low.

Anyone else feel there wasn't much wrong with the 3 subs? Has it had an impact or is it just the case that the difference is down to other things? Are there any advantages or benefits?

There's not really a strong shift in opinion.

It was excellent for Rangers to win the league the way they did and we performed very well. I think we conceded something like just 12 goals or something? It was a great season.

Just as I said above its a great achievement for Celtic to do similar this year.

But people are allowed to evolve their opinions over time are they not? The current nucleus of the Rangers team if you like that I assume you refer to has now won 2 trophies in 5 seasons. If I was to refer to that as anything other than average I'd be rightly laughed at. It's not a great Rangers team and yet we have lost 2 league games in over 3 years to those outside Celtic.

Ok if my OP confused you to the point you had to go through a couple of years worth of articles to catch me out on average vs comparatively average fair enough but I hoped the point of the article was pretty clear in highlighting the difference in outcomes since 5 subs was introduced vs 3 subs and this not being as a result of the OF going to previously unseen levels.

It does seem a fair shift. Less than 2 seasons ago, this team weren’t getting the credit they deserved for beating what was much the same dross as it is now, but now they’re an average team?! This was at the same time the 5 subs rule was introduced from memory.

As for having to go through a couple of years worth of articles?!

The article I used is on the very 1st page on your profile articles. It didn’t take long.

I’ll leave it at that.

You keep referencing comments from 2 years ago to contest my comments about the current team. It's not the same team.

We have gone through 2 Managers since then. 6 of our starting line up on Saturday were not there 2 years ago. Of the other 5, most would agree the keeper has had age caught up with him and another for various reasons has checked out.

It's like me going through any positive comments from the Rodgers unbeaten season and dismissing any positive comments on the basis it was more or less the same team as the year before under Deila who had not performed to the same levels.

Indeed.

From today's Beeb footy gossip:

"Bristol Rovers boss Joey Barton says maybe one day he will have to take over at Hearts,Hibernian or Aberdeen to "ram it down the Old Firm's throats" since he is fed up being described as a flop from his playing stint with Rangers. (Scottish Sun)"

WTF?! "Flop" is being generous, you plank.

Warburton was raging - he thought De Longhi was a strong, black, Italian striker with a good body.
