The thing is that a bid surely doesn’t trigger the clause? If that were the case then any club could have done that at any time before it ran out and then signed him afterwards?
I would think the player would have to have a mediacal, agree terms and the transfer completed before the clause ran out surely?

That’s not generally how triggering a clause works.
It just needs to be triggered by the deadline, not deal completed by the deadline.
