Womens football

Just like to give a big shout out to Women's football. I know important the sport is is to Women for their own sense of equality and they've worked incredibly hard to make it a success.

Some incredible stats on womens football

- Over 2 billion tune into FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, up from 1.12 billion in 2019
- English Women’s Super League registered whopping 729% attendance growth between 2017 and 2022

Women's football is the most popular Women's sport on the planet and I hope to see it grow and thrive.

Keep it up

So you've admitted the 66 WC team would be hard pressed to beat a league one team. Thanks, that supports my point that there's no reason not to merge the mens and womens WC achievements on the basis of the level of football being played.

You've also stated that 400 million globally watched the 66 WC and over 30 million were English. Compare this to a global audience of 2 billion for the Womens WC with an English audience of 12 million and you can quickly see why the WC would be a greater achievement for the women than the 66 mens team.

As for people not so many being around who watched the 66 world cup, this just simply means it's time to move on and stop being stuck in the past. Half the World are Women and men don't own the sport.

At least you've got your facts straight even if your thinking still belongs to an era where we used outside toilets. DJ seems to think 1.4 billion watched the T20 womens cricket as opposed to 100 million which tells you everything you need to know.

Well of course the 1966 team would be hard pressed to beat a League 1 side, most of them are dead.

I'll just leave it at that.

The final -which was the only match I watched- was actually a pretty good game.

It seems like some people (men) want to hate the women's game just because.

For those who are prepared to give it a chance, I'd just suggest trying to avoid drawing the parallels withe the men's game. Women track and field athletes run slower, jump less, and throw less than the men, but plenty people watch the sport without feeling the urge to mention the bleedin' obvious every two minutes.

You're so right.

I've been watching the World Champs Athletics over the last few days and I've thought nothing of cheering on KJT, Laura Muir, Jaz Sawyers etc. In fact most of the big names I've noticed have been women yet no judgement is made. Maybe it's because it's always been that way? Same for tennis. Eventually people will get used to it and the archaic boos (mostly from old blokes) will become quieter and quieter as the years go by.

You're definitely spot on about not making parallels. I get annoyed when people try to use the women's success to patch over the men's failures, using the overplayed mantra about 'years of hurt'. The women's success will never cure the ills of the men's game and neither should it. They're two separate sports in my eyes. Whether that's wrong or not, I don't know but I think when achievements are woven together it annoys a lot of people. Ultimately you're right though. It's about not seeing them as comparable is the key.

There's a couple of good points here but the reason women's athletics, women's boxing and women's tennis are so very watchable, is the excitement. These female sports still generate excitement, women's football does not fall into that category which is why I can't watch it.

I see goals on the news and laugh out loud at the goalkeeping and defending, kick it high and boom it's a goal. It's unfortunately, just not credible enough to watch, unlike other female sports.

No media frenzy can magically improve the quality or excitement factor unfortunately.

quality is still laughable

OMFG. I saw this article and before I read the comments, I knew which posters would ridicule the women's game and which would be supportive.

In 2021 the census had 51% of the UK population as female. The current worldwide figure is 49.6% are female.

So are people seriously writing off half the population as insignificant. I enjoyed this World Cup. Not quite as much as the male version, but it was enjoyable.

Comparing U15s or League 2 to the women's game is ridiculous. Think about tennis, golf, boxing, etc etc. Men v men. Women v women. Simple really.

I agree comparing U15s or League 2 to women's football is ridiculous

It's more u13s and Sunday league standard (that's a Sunday league played mainly by 50+ men with beer bellies)

Don’t mind women’s football getting exposure but I hate having it rammed down our throat. It’s a vastly inferior product to any decent level men’s football. That’s being polite. It’s just got to silly levels now. What is the real need for that new woman on MNF chatting her absolute garbage and harming the quality of the show ? It’s bad enough having idiots like Neville on there to start with. What did she say the other day? When a company sponsor a club it should be 50% men and 50% to the woman’s team hahaha absolutely no concept of business, or even what the aim of sponsorship is.
