Strange and harsh example. In a 48-team tournament, Ecuador v Hungary would probably be the standout tie of the group stages

Joke or not this is correct. There will be far weaker combinations of teams than Ecuador and Hungary in a 48 team World Cup.

When it becomes a 64 team World Cup in 2042 we can look forward to group stage matches like Equatorial Guinea vs Bahrain.

FIFA have got the perfect set up. Make the host country pay for the costs of stadiums and infrastructure and cream off billions of dollars from tickets, TV rights and marketing.

Yep they essentially force the host country to give them special tax privileges for the duration of the tournament so they can suck every last penny out of a tournament

Honestly at the rate this is going, why even have a qualifying round?

Why not just set it up to where all countries participate in the tournament but broken down into rounds like the FA Cup does?

I mean…as much as it’s changing (which is stupid) but why not?

The 32 team format was perfect. They've ruined it by making it 48 teams. It won't be as good.

I always preferred the 16 team Euros. I also quite liked the 24 team WC - but 48 is faaacking mental, who is interested in Ecuador vs Hungary outside of those 2 nations.

It’s a matter of time before they invite San Marino or the Faroe Islands to a finals tournament as part of their campaign to endorse growth in the game
