Seeing DB7 back in the news has reminded me of the couple of times I was lucky enough to meet him as a kid and what a humble man he always seemed to come across as.
When I was younger (late 90s so probably age 6-9) my dad used to occasionally take me to the Cliff where United trained and we’d walk round the fence to try and watch the team train. At the end we’d wait at the front and hope the odd player would stop for an autograph or a photo.
Gary Neville never did
Scholes never did
Giggs never did
Keano did occasionally
The two who always did every time were SAF, and Beckham. You have to remember as well this was around the time he was becoming the mega star he is today and around the time of the infamous World Cup incident. He’d always stop and sign autographs and chat to young fans. I can’t imagine the same thing happening today and I appreciate it’s a different world but they are memories I look back on very fondly.
The other time was around 2000/2001. I was in Clinton cards with my mum and dad in the Trafford centre and there was a bloke in a hat in the shop. My mum said ‘sh 1t that’s David Beckham’ and I said ‘where?’ As I turned round and walked head first into him and fell on the floor
He picked me up, checked I was ok and apologised and my dad shook his hand, told him to win the league and he went off with a big guy who I assume was his security.
Just a couple of little stories anyway. He’s a very humble guy in my experience despite being one of the most famous people on the planet, and a lot of modern day footballers could learn from him.

I went to the cliff once. Scholes, Giggs, Becks, Butt, and Cantona all came out, among others, for signings and photos.
I loved Cantona, (obviously) and couldn't take a decent photo with him at the fence. So, when he was going toward his car my dad picked me and my sister up and put us on the other side of the fence and told us to run and take a picture with him. Security chased us, but Cntona said it was alright and we took a great photo with him.

Beckham was fabulous with fans for a few years, much less the last couple when he had become a mega star.
Pees me right off though, when he casually insists his tidiness is OCD.
