Away from the discourse surrounding

corrupt unfit for purpose officials...

Almost at the half-way point, skimming through the results, has there ever been a time / season when the league has been more volatile than it currently is now?

Crazy high scoring results with no sign of letting up (or unexpected low scoring close run matches).

The numbers bear out. Highest average goals scored per game in the PL by a long way, at this rate on-course to breaking record set in the very first PL campaign in which 42 matches were played in a season. Wild.

Death of defending, decline / dying breed in elite defenders or more emphasis on attack and nature of open competitive league, somewhat foregoing the defence?

Everyone presses these days meaning the ball is turned over higher up the pitch and they are closer to goal - so theoretically it’s easier to score.

Burnley don’t play like the my used to and long gone are the shiete defensive sides - West Brom for instance who just park the bus

15 goals conceded is some record tbh. I do remember one time, when the sugar daddy bought you all the best players from Football Manager , including some great DMs and CBs. Still 15 is some record.

I don't think its the death of defending, just a greater emphasis on attack.

Football tactics continually evolve, often to counteract the prevailing style of the day. Added to greater levels of skill and technical ability i think this will always see more goals and attacking threat. Defending is defending. The art of stopping an opponent hasn't really changed much and cannot. The art of beating a defender has evolved massively, both individually and in team play.

Fatigue plays a bigger role than people realise too. It's not just physical fatigue but also mental fatigue in not switching on to stuff as fast as usual. For example you can see fulham's demolition of West ham coming a mile off for example

Probably the most bizarre result of the season looking at it now

You’re also overlooking the fact that games are much longer nowadays with more injury time being added than before.

So if they’re on the pitch for longer then of course there are gonna be more goals. Would be curious to see a stat for number of additional injury time goals this season.
