Kevin Pietersen was better than Joe Root

KP was a sensational player. Scored runs away from home in tough conditions and was entertaining. Root is a class player but not as good as KP. What does everyone else think?

KP was insane but Root spent half of his career being the only one who could hold a bat whereas KP often came in with a solid foundation already set where he could flourish.

If Root played in Strauss' England side he'd probably average 55.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
KP did it against all time greats like McGrath, Warne, Murali, Dale Steyn, Shoaib Akthar to name a few. Root hasn't faced that level of opponent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's faced Steyn and I'd say Rabada, Ashwin, Cummins, Boult and Bumrah will go down as all time greats when they retire.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The likes of Cummins, Rabada, Ashwin etc have not bowled at all time greats like Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting, Mohammed Yousuf etc to be considered greats. Those batsmen were on a diffrernt level to current players

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Root, Kohli, Smith, Williamson will all go down as all time greats.

In what order?

Tests

Smith
Root
Williamson
Kohli

ODI's

Kohli
Root
Smith
Williamson

I'd probably put Williamson second in both categories. He is incredibly underrated against the other 3. Averages over 50 in both formats.

It's quite difficult to compare bowlers across eras as well. How would all those greats listed cope in the modern era with the way batsmen now score?

It's a very different environment for bowlers now, particularly in ODI cricket. When the likes of Ahktar, McGrath, Warne and Murali were around; 200 was defendable, 250 was considered a high score and 300 was a winning one. You score 250 now and its considered low.

They would face a different challenge these days and whilst I have no doubt they would still be great; I imagine the likes of Rabada, Ashwin, Cummins, Boult and Bumrah would also look great in the previous era.

There was also a lot of flat pitches in the 90s and 00s which I think boosted some batsman's numbers in comparison to today.

You don't see too many pitches these days where team A puts on 550 then team B puts on 500.

Yeah not much in it. I picked Root ahead of Kane as imo the former at times bats for the team more than Kane does.

I don't think 'Bazball' has helped him

100% agree.

Take India for example they used to score 500+ almost every test at home back in the day. Now they can barely muster 350 without a struggle.

For some reason they decided to make dust bowls which doesnt help their batters.

Batsmen play differently these days. They take way more risks and the focus now is more on scoring runs quicker than accumulating huge scores
