He lacks the finesse to play to the standard we require as a deep midfielder, and had Mount been fit this season, I believe Scott McTominay would have played far less and we'd have played better football. But without his 7 goals, which have earned United 12 points, that's where we would currently be: sitting on 29 points from 24 games, in 12th behind Chelsea and Fulham, with a couple of points' cushion above Bournemouth, rather than in 6th place with 41 points.

Over years of stuttering football, involving periods when the players' motivation has been questionable, McT has of course been conspicuously less talented than United midfielders of the glory years, but I don't think anyone can question his professionalism and commitment, which have been consistent despite rarely being a starter. Whether or not he has more seasons left in his United career, I'm really glad a player who has always given 100% - and often been disparaged in return - has got to make such a significant contribution. He's currently responsible for nearly a third of our points.

McT is our Gerrard really. Will never be good enough in midfield to control games but, when you need a goal, there's every chance they'll get one.

Agreed. Astute observation as always Diafol.

"Issue is whether he can sustain it and make it a role that he’s comfortable with"

If we get to the point we are challenging for titles I'm sure he'd be comfortable with it.

Not necessarily, he may have ambitions of playing regular football rather than being a bit part player.

.........................

A lot of football fans have trouble understanding this. It is very rare that a player will spend his whole career at a club being just a bit part player.

The vast majority will move on for regular football.

Good spot. Like Gerrard, he's a natural attacking right-back who has been misprofiled as a midfielder.

McTominay is a centre forward in disguise.

As a jobbing midfielder he's pretty ordinary.

But then so are rashford, casemiro, mainoo (despite the hyped up potential) martial, anthony and eriksen

Apart from Mount, Garnacho and Fernandes (United's most contributory player) the midfield department is nowt special.

However, that doesn't mean mctominay can't be a useful focal point.

But even then with him and hojlund making a real nuisance of themselves, at the sharp end, then the absence of supply issue still needs to be resolved.

Two centre-forwards should be the United way, and he could be a temporary stop gap. But it should still only be temporary.

Utd playing two up top with McT being one of them is an idea I fully support.
