Is Prem experience overrated?

A few fans always clamour for us to sign players with Premier league experience.

I think good scouting is good scouting and usually prem experience is overrated and over priced.

Richarlison
Johnson
Bissouma
Solomon

All have prem experience and cost close to 130m but none are guaranteed starters. I'll be glad if Lange keeps up his work and searches for gems outside of the prem

Don’t think any experience is overrated! Sure some kids have amazing natural talent, but there always stuff to learn.

A Prem player is generally a bit more of a steady investment I guess, some can be awful though, we signed some absolute duds from United and Chelsea in the past.

You need great scouts and probably a bit of luck to unearth top talents from abroad nowadays as any obvious talents will be on every clubs radar as soon as they start to perform.

What's interesting is several expensive players from other leagues have flopped spectacularly, I think worse than Prem to Prem singings so in that sense perhaps if you have a lot of cash to splash the Prem is maybe a better market to buy in at times.

But for the absolute steals the likes of Brighton seem to have a knack for and several of Spurs best players, shopping overseas still seems the go.

Don’t know why Bissouma is put in that category. Clearly a quality player and someone who didn’t cost much

Is he clearly quality tho? As far as I can tell he's had a run of 12ish games where he looked good, but that's over the course of 2 years

I guess it's harder to find a hidden gem when they're in plain sight. More often than not, if you sign a Prem player you know exactly what you're getting but they're unlikely to pull up any trees unless you pull off a signing like Robertson from Hull, who no one else took a punt on but Liverpool. We knew how good Maddison was before he joined us. Equally, I don't think we're seeing a level of performance from Richy or Johnson that we didn't already see at Everton or Forest. It's just a lot harder to find top talent in the Prem without paying inflated prices, which we just wouldn't. Can you imagine how much Vicario, VDV, Udogie and Sarr would have been in if we'd signed them from Prem teams? You'd be looking at 50m minimum for each of them. Instead we got them all for around 80m abroad. Signing Prem players isn't really worth it unless they fill the homegrown quota in terms of British players.

That said, there's definitely room for it if you have the money and the need. Look at Rice at Arsenal. We're just not in that wealth bracket to be able to do it.

Wages are also a factor. Players in this league will be on far more than those abroad so the total sum of their contract is likely to be very, very expensive. I'm not sure on balance that's worth the gain of being able to hit the ground running. It's only really worth it if you pick up a star player like Maddison for a relatively low sum or you look at players in their final year/six months, like Bissouma.

It’s hugely overrated and I bet if someone was bothered to do the work you’d see a similar amount of hits/flops from the PL as you would from abroad

think you'll find plenty of very successful hires who came with NO Prem experience, like Salah, KdB, .......
------
Both had PL experience before joining Liverpool / Man City.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
KdeB exactly 3 small appearances for Chelsea, total 14 minutes...not exactly Prem experience, is it?
Yes, Mo Salah did have 13 appearances for Chelsea.
And how about.......
Did Vicaorio, Romero, Mickey Vdv, Udogie, or Kulusevski have any Premiership experience when we hired them?
Or Son for that matter?

To.compound this..when you have an owner like Levy you need to make every penny count. That's why for me Johnson was disappointing. I was expecting us to unearth more attacking gems from Asia, Latin America or even Central Europe. I have plenty time for Veliz as I think he will be a type of Llorente forward to use for certain games but we need more.
