4th place predictor

Thought I'd get the ball rolling on this as we need some new articles on the Spurs page.

I've found this nifty little page that gives the probability on the final league table based on the final 8 games or so...

https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/premier-league/league-table/predicted

They have us finishing in 4th on goal difference and when I did my own predictions here https://www.worldfootball.net/table_calculator/eng-premier-league/ I got virtually the same result. It's going to be very, very tight. In each of my predictions, I had us down as losing to City, Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea but drawing with Arsenal, which I think is a fair assumption based on previous results against those sides.

My point is that I think there seems to be a feeling that we'll breeze it because we're 4th with a game in hand. It won't be. That's why, and I know I'm gonna get dog's abuse for this, I've been supporting Arsenal and West Ham in Europe. I even watched the A Madrid v Dortmund game last night in the hope the Germans lost, which they did. Everything hinges really on that City game against Madrid. If they go out, and as seems likely Bayern go through against Arsenal, I think the place will go to the Germans.

Now I know the general feeling is that we'd rather be in a competition we can win, i.e the Europa League, but honestly I think Ange is telling lies about the importance of the CL. He wants it. He's desperate for it. More importantly, the players definitely want it. They've said as much which suggests it's being spoken about in the dressing room. Getting in the CL I think shows the players that they're on the right track with the manager. It adds to their belief in him. That's why it's important, aside from the financial difference. We can win the EL but really, without the bigger sides dropping down into it anymore, it further depreciates the value in winning it. It'll just be on the next step up from the conference league.

Then there's the value in the market at being a CL club. We'll have more to spend on the rebuild. I know Ange has said that he doesn't want players to join because we'd be a CL club but you CAN sign players with the right attitude that otherwise wouldn't be interested if we hadn't qualified. The better you get, the more players want to get on board. That's just the reality of the game and CL qualification just means you've got greater options.

I only care about us, just as Maddison said. I couldn't care less about the title race or who wins the CL. I just want what's best for my club and if Arsenal beating Bayern helps us, then so be it. They'll go out in the next round anyway so what's the big deal?

4th or 5th, not sure it really matters, champions league or europa, would need to spend considerably in the summer to even compete in champions league so probably best we get Europa
----------------------------------------------------------------------
but you will have much more guaranteed income from CL to be able to spend more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
and you can guarantee that United and Chelsea will wake up at some point. This is a good opportunity to get some transfer revenue on the books whilst we can.

Thing is UCL guarantees income for one season. Transfer bought off the back of that money is on the books for 5 years.

You have to be cautious if spending big from UCL money.

Bit like promoted teams coming up to the PL. Next season they may be down again with an expensive squad and wages and much reduced revenues.

yeah but if you never start accumulating that extra money to stretch that FFP amount more then you will never get there. as things stand your far more capped in your spendings if your income doesnt increase.

It’s sad that we spend our time trying to figure out if we can scrape fourth and qualify for a tournament we won’t win.

Imagine what it must be like to watch your club actually trying to win something rather than just get in the money spots for levy’s bonus.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just enjoy having something meaningful to play for through to the end of the season.

There have been many many seasons in the last 3 decades when our season is already over at this point.

I have enjoyed this season more than 2007/8 when Ramos lead us to the League Cup and 11th place, with just 11 wins....and i went to that final too!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel the same. Sometimes the excitement of not knowing where this is all heading is way better than the pragmatic approach winning the odd trophy. I remember when Sandy said that winning the League Cup in 2008 was better than the CL run to the final in 2019, on account that the latter was meaningless because we didn't win. I always found that to be such a dumb take on what football is to most fans. It's about the excitement. Under Ramos you could see how abject we were becoming, which saw us bottom of the league the following year. That's why I'll always have an enormous amount of respect for Pochettino and why he'll always be way about the likes of Ramos or George Graham, who won trophies with us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would agree mostly with this Fridge, but the way we played in the final ruined it for me. I thought we were embarrassingly poor and again Poch dropped a clanger when it mattered by playing an unfit Kane. No shame in losing to Liverpool but the way we did damaged me 🤣

I think circumstances changed the game. The moment that penalty was given everything changed. We came up against a Liverpool side happy to counter after that. I think Poch would have been damned if he did and damned if he didn't regarding Kane. Imagine losing that game and leaving Kane on the bench. He'd have got dog's abuse. Then there's the occasion. A lot of our players froze and that's not on Poch. Liverpool's players froze the year before and lost. It happens. The fact they were back a year later gave them the edge. Plus they were a better side than us. We were the underdog so we weren't expected to win it. I'd rather focus on the fact that we got that, rather than scrutinise the final failure. It's unthinkable a club like ours got to a European Cup final. That in itself was a huge achievement.

It definitely damaged me. I had about 10 mates round mine watching it on a projector with a load of beers. Problem was some were impartial, 2 were Spurs fans and I think 3 supported Liverpool. It was feckin murder when they won it. Worst part is, you're still hosting so you can't sulk like a cvnt, like I wanted to

I just thought he could’ve brought Kane on but he couldn’t start him and bring him off.

But, again, that squad was left well short on quality!

They get parachute payments that's why the same clubs return to PL each season mostly

I hear you, but I think we have to consider where we are right now. We're in the rebuild phase so money and profile are more important than trophies right now. We need good players in to compete for trophies further down the line.
