Trump wants to invade Greenland

He’s been talking about it for weeks but for the first time I actually think he’s gonna do it. The island contains a huge amount of natural resources that Space Karen would love to get her hands on and to be fair is a very strategic position for the US to hold both militarily and also for shipping routes once the ice sheets melt away in this post-net zero world the mango Mussolini is trying to usher in.

Will Denmark be able to do anything about it. NATO on NATO attacks have never happened so who knows what will go down. Along with the Canada talk and what he may have planned for Mexico it looks like Trump is going scorched earth and fack knows just how bad things are going to get in the next 4 years. The rise of the far right doesn’t look like going away anytime soon.

It feels like we’ve woken up in a timeline where right is wrong and wrong is right. Who will be our hero. How ironic if out of the ashes AI stepped up to be the hero we needed. Hafi, arise. Save the cheerleader, save the world.

...not to mention blackmailing Ukraine to support a witch-hunt against Hunter Biden while Crimea and the Donbass were occupied, and consistently making very friendly noises to Putin / disparaging comments about Ukraine since the full invasion. Yeah, but Obama was "weak on Crimea" so I guess both sides have their faults.

'They're all as bad as each other' is up there with the most harmful and morally complacent fallacies of our age.

Could copy and paste that for the discussion on the politics thread earlier today, Dazza.

Yeah, but then the idiots that do this would just double down on their nonsense like usual.

At least France has spoken out against Trump's planned invasion of Greenland.

Busby, there's plenty to criticise in Obama's foreign policy, but I don't see much acknowledgement of the complexity of the world he was dealing with - it's as if you think all the things you've listed could have been resolved with the right policy when foreign relations is really about analysing trade-offs between multiple bad and good impacts of any course of action. There's also no consistency in your critique: where he used military action he's a warmonger; where he relied on diplomacy he was 'weak'.

Again and again we see imperfections in moderate leaders operating within democratic norms equated a figure who fits much more neatly within the norms of authoritarianism: lawlessness, nuclear brinkmanship, threatening neighbours and allies, arbitrary and capricious foreign policy changes, etc.

He asked for a list, I gave him one.

I really liked Obama, a lot more than every other US president in my lifetime.

The thing with Donald Trump, I think it’s difficult to know when he’s being serious or he is posturing. I don’t believe he is as stupid as he makes out.

The US will invade Greenland, spend $1bn then pull out with their tails between their legs.

The script was written in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The US rely on NATO for their military positioning throughout the globe, arms sales, trade partnerships, technology and coop missions.

Invading Greenland would be economical and geopolitical suicide. NATO proven it's ability to reinvent itself in the past, I expect Trump is laying the groundwork for something similar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Many aspects of Trump's platform will result in economic suicide if they are implemented. Punitive tariffs on all trade partners would massively hurt the US. Deportation of millions of undocumented migrants would cause an economic depression.

Basically, the most optimistic readings of the imminent Trump presidency are based on the idea that he might not do what he says he'll do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That didn't stop Brexiteers. Much like most of those promoting it didn't give a fck about the country as long as they made a pretty mint, Trump gives zero fcks about the U.S. (probably laughs at the MAGA nuts) as long as he and the other mendacious filth around him fill their pockets.

And even if the economy tanks he'll continue to blame foreigners or Mexico or someone and the morons will continue to support him. You just have to look at the disaster that is Brexit. Anyone holding Farage or any of the fruitcakes who led us into it? No we end up electing him MP! The world's gone mad.

Yep and most are anti-vaxxer 5G Bill Gates conspiracy nuts.

The bloke who claimed "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters." (and isn't wrong) isn't going to give a sheit about the economy or anything because he knows he'll come out of it just fine.
