He tripped himself up...

A lot of headlines about the penalty in the Liverpool match with Bournemouth. "Controversial VAR call helps Liverpool to a win", "Liverpool penalty leaves fans fuming" among the reports about what was called a contentious decision.

Always makes me laugh when people say a player "tripped himself up", or "kicked his own leg" when running through. It is obvious in these situations there is contact that causes the player to lose his stride and 'kick his own leg'. Yet every time there is a mass debate about it. When players dive, they don't kick themselves

There have been occasions when players have done this on purpose but it's a difficult skill to master. What's impossible to master is having your eyes on the ball as it comes down, bringing your leg back to shoot, defender clips your foot into your other foot, tripping you.

Although I can understand if people thought it wasn't a penalty from the initial angle they showed as you can't see the clip from that angle. It took you to see it from the angle the referee saw it.

Don't think I have ever seen anyone trip themselves up on purpose, there is always a touch from an opponent in these situations.

Motd summed it up well, its a pen. But its one of those if its not given its not overturned by var either. Bournemouths evanilson had one turned down vs brentford they showed too after iraola mentioned consistency.

If say he did trip himself up thats damn fkin impressive to do it like that. Itd be some art lol

The commentator during the highlights on MOTD said he was surprised it wasn't overturned.

People should have their Sky and BT packages revoked if they don't understand how running works. It will be the same people who don't understand the curve of ball being over the line but not touching it. Or the same people who think getting the ball means that it can never be a foul.

To be fair, I think some of the early dives really did involve deliberate self-trips. You can get a more convincing natural fall than with a plain dive and when lots of legs are together even the noise might help trick the ref. Kids were doing it on the field when I was at school.

I've had it done to me. Running at full speed (comedy slow by professional standards obviously) and some wonker just flicks my heel. One leg then clips the other and it's game over, zero chance to not hit for turf.

Dont even have to be running at speed a steady walk a clip at the right moment and uve little chance.

Should do a wum compilation of athletes "diving" in athletics when running round the track and getting clipped in exactly the same way.

I do it to my nine year old son all the time and he falls over. I then kick him on the head for diving.
