Mathys Tel

I've been quite impressed with the start he has made, his attitude looks excellent and I like the fact that even though he's new he's not afraid to shout instructions and get into other players. Calling on players to press etc..

I also thought his finish was outstanding, if that had been the winning goal it would have been talked about a lot more than it was. His body was half turned and it was a real cultured finish to shape his foot whilst still adding the necessary power to beat the keeper.

He's saying all the right things and with some better, more experienced players around him he could turn out to be a good signing.

He has been very vocal about the club in a positive way and I'm hoping he'll be the shot in the arm we need.

Could be one of those who isn’t involved a lot during the game but will just pop up with goals.

It also highlights how we massively messed up with Brennan Johnson.

Think we have a £48 mil fee in place for Tel, Johnson cost £47 mil (yikes).

You can see the difference..

Tel is agressive
Confident
Can go buy a player
Can manipulate the ball
Can finish - even when not a tap in..
Shows leadership at a young age

Johnson is 3 years older and looks much worse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is all a bit premature. Tel has only had 1 and a half games so far. Good finish though.

I think most agree we overpaid for BJ and his overall game isn't great but he has contributed to goals. 12 goals in 31 games in all comps is at least an improvement on last season, while still at the age of 23. This is better than Son, who is captain and should still be in his peak years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Johnson is still young and has plenty of time to improve I never quite get why some of our fans give him such a hard time. He contributes quite a bit just with his goals.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because his overall play isn't great I guess. If you take away the goals he doesn't offer much. Not great at tracking back, ball retention, control, decision making. But yes he is still young and could hopefully iron out some of these things. For now he's like a good bench option.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well if you take away Hallands goals, what exactly does he contribute? I would sooner have a player on the pitch that guarantees a fair amount of goals, than one that doesn't.

I was just about to make the same point about Haaland. There's been games where Haaland has touched the ball like 6 times but he's scored 2 goals and City have won.

Tel worried me on his debut. Seemed very lightweight, not really a striker. More of a Walcott sort than a striker.

But he has improved over this short time, and no doubt that goal will help him. He hasnt had much football and will need to get used to this pacey and aggressive league. I'm hopeful but by no means certain he's a keeper.

Hmmm but one is among the best goal scorers in the world, perhaps the best and has been doing it for years. The other has shown his best form this season and is nowhere near that level.

Yes but Haaland is, or has been prolific, I wouldn't say the Johnson is?! His overall teamwork and play is bang average, hasn't done anything to impress me and the odd goal here or there via a back post tap in won't either.

Just my opinion of course...

I must admit up until he scored I was not overly impressed. But he scored a nice goal, and it cannot have been easy to have been thrown straight in at the deep end almost since he arrived. Obviously with Richarlison getting injured, I doubt he expected to be leading the line so soon.

Worth a read as to why Bayern let him go on loan with option to buy!!!

Thank you for sharing, but this was not worth a read.

"Is it the things he’s doing off the field? Could he be a problem in the dressing room? We don’t know.“, Robinson said.

If he doesn’t know, why is he suggesting this in the first place? It’s completely baseless. I tell you why, it’s called unconscious bias, that’s me putting it mildly. Time and time again, the media and some pundits love to whip up a story about how a young black player is “trouble” off the field. Raheem Sterling had it his entire career. Great player, but was always vilified because he wouldn’t lick the media’s ass. Once the media are on your back, public perception is heading in one direction only as its relentless. Benoit Assou Ekotto. He was another player that always received negative connotations. Water off a ducks back as he’d do the business on the field week in, week out. Djed Spence. All I ever hear is that his attitude is sorted now so that’s why he’s playing well. WTAF! What evidence is there to confirm that he had a “bad attitude” a few months ago? Err, maybe Udogie was in great form and couldn’t be dropped. Now Udogie is injured and Spence has come in and is playing very well, his “attitude has miraculously improved” has it? How convenient. I could list out another 10, 15, 20 players but the point has been made.

I can guarantee you, when Archie Gray or Bergvall, lose a bit of form, which they will as all players do, we won’t be hearing about a problem with their attitudes or any suggestions of “”off field bad behaviour”. This article is just another example of shameful and lazy journalism.

Agree with everything you said there, Don. It's a massive problem with football media. I suspect it's part of the reason Ange gets so much hate. I heard one off the Sky commentators during the United game saying how Amorim never changes his system, and how you have to love him for it.. meanwhile Ange is labelled clueless and arrogant. Anywho.

Aside from the bit about Djed. There's certainly enough to suggest he was out of the team cos of his attitude. Ange has even said in a press conference, how he 'grew up a bit'. You can't exactly put that down to profiling or whatever, it's not like he wasn't playing Udogie..
