Solomon Chant

I was waiting for the news story since I first heard the chant. Club statement:
A club statement said: "Hate crime and discriminatory language or chanting is not acceptable at Leeds United and the club has a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination abuse of all kinds.
"The club has received a large number of complaints from Leeds United supporters regarding the chant and had hoped the initial strategy of condemning it through the media [in December] and working with supporter groups would prevent this from happening in the future, but it has sadly become more prominent in recent matches, including at Elland Road.
After monitoring the situation at recent home games, the origins of the chant at Elland Road appear to come from the Norman Hunter South Stand, particularly in blocks FA5, FA6, SS5 and SS6.
As a result, there will be an increased CCTV surveillance and stewarding presence in FA5, FA6, SS5 and SS6 at all home games between now and the end of the season and action will be taken against any person who participates in the chant, including the issuing of a club banning order."

What are your thoughts?

Singing do a didi didi dum didee doo,
Running past defenders scoring one or two
Looks good (looks good)
Looks fine (looks fine)
Manor Solomon’s on my mind & he hates Palestine

Thats the song
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The song ain't terrible and there definitely is some sterilisation with the chants. But if the song was about a Palestinian player and the chant ended in hates Isreal it wouldn't be a good look.

Tbf it's like a lot of this culture war stuff there is a lot more important things to care about.

Also I can imagine the person that came up with this song is one of the first people to say keep politics out of sport

Don't like it. So unnecessary. People should put more than a couple of seconds into making a chant.

Certainly if the originator is of Israeli/Jewish extraction they should know better because, as you say Enfield, there would cries of antisemitism if the boot was on the other foot. I do think the club is being a bit heavy handed though.

Or maybe people should be able to do what they want.

If a football chant offends, that ends in “ He hates palestine”, then most things will offend you.

Too many people, get offended on behalf of others.

Its not that deep, enjoy life.

It would be interesting to know what the basis of the complaints actually are, for as others have said it's not hate speech, racist etc and a court of law would have a field day with it.

It is however, something that people know will cause contention and we have enough of that about this issue right now and I say repeapedly, I don't want to see politics in sport.

I have always said it would be better if we stopped allowing the politics of other countries to be brought onto our streets…full stop

Stand up if you hate ManU…he hates Palestine…

My closest Costa Rican friend went to work in Israel 7 years ago, so he’s in a fairly neutral position. The hate is reserved for Hamas terrorists…not Palestine nor its people who live in greater fear of Hamas than they do of Netanyahu.

So keep politics out of sport Jonty?

Yes, I’m with you there, because there are plenty of other good songs and chants out there, and Manor is definitely deserving of a better one…

It’s a contentious song because of what’s going on over there but it’s not offensive. The amount of times I’ve read that the song glorifies the murder of children and genocide…….crazy

The club are clearly bowing to the pressure from some but you can’t threaten banning orders for that song and then host an event at the ground with someone who’s banned throughout Europe for hate speech

"Stand up if you hate ManU…he hates Palestine"

exactly, that's what I'd said I'd be keen to understand what the reasons are for the complaints.
