André Onana has been left out of Manchester United’s squad to face Newcastle on Sunday.
The United goalkeeper remained at home when Ruben Amorim’s squad travelled to Tyneside on Saturday ahead of the game.
Onana’s understudy, Altay Bayindir, is in line to make his Premier League debut at St James’ Park.

Amorim defending him and then dropping him is such a weird flex. Why even defend him then? He went out of his way to say everyone makes mistakes, I made more mistakes than Onana. Which in itself is an inexcusable comment. But then dropping him makes no sense with his defence of the player. Anyway, Amorim is way out of his league. Never heard so much waffle from a trainer, other than maybe Mourinho.

Why do it? I guess we'll have a better idea on Thursday. If Onana is back, he can put it down to 'giving him a rest' to get his focus rather than dropping him. If he's not, I suppose the strong support followed by giving him the chop looks like ruthlessness. But I'm not sure there's ever been a manager in the history of football management who hasn't backed a player more wholeheartedly in public than he actually did in his private thoughts.
As for 'waffle', Amorim is generally very honest about what he's trying to do and what isn't and (occasionally) is working. ETH was waffling last season when his answers to journalists asking questions about tactics grew more and more evasive / disconnected from what was actually happening.
As for 'out of his depth' based on communication style? People read way too much into these things. If a team is struggling, the coach's unorthodox candour in press conferences is catastrophic. If the team is good, his disarmingly open manner is a sign of genius.

Does he? Kind of has a point. I’m not blindly following our so far- terrible coach, so sometimes you have to step back and cast a critical eye on the poundshop bluto

Even if you are not backing Amorim, defending your under pressure and still the team number one keeper then resting him a game before the most important game of the season is not the reason to somehow draw a line. Its logical, its reasonable, something most managers would do.

I’m not saying I’m not backing Amorim, just I don’t think he’s done a particularly good job. Public ally defending then dropping- because that’s what it is- that player sends out mixed signals. It’s not great management imo

"Casting a critical eye" implies some level of critique, i.e. analysis. I don't see that here. Just "he waffles / he's out of his depth". No one should have blind faith, but I don't think giving a new coach who hasn't had much time and joined in very unfavourable circumstances (mid-season, not many full training sessions due to fixture congestion, squad which was playing terribly and low on confidence, and imbalanced for the formation he had been brought in to instil) a bit of the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile, we're still a long way from being a good team, but if you can't see that we've become far harder to break down when out of possession, and we're managing to build up play into the final third a lot more consistently than before (only for things to break down when we reach a young player who takes loads of bad shots and a young player who doesn't take any shots), then maybe there's some blind disbelief going on here, as well as blind faith.

Name any manager and I will find you examples of him doing just that. (Or someone else will do it. I'm saying this rhetorically.)

Fair point RR, shoes of wood wasn’t analysing, but the sentiment though a bit forceful is’nt completely wrong, it does send mixed messages. What will be interesting is if onana returns next game.
Do we look any better? Not convinced, perhaps a little bit, but it’s not any real measurable strides.

You should go for Ramsdale in the summer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just no
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why? He's a good keeper, home-grown and a positive character both on and off the pitch, should in theory be reasonably priced as coming from a relegated side. Given the lack of funds at United he'd be a smart buy imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He’s rank average and there’s a reason why he has three relegations to his name.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's a decent keeper, obviously the relegations are a black mark but it doesn't make him a bad keeper. Given the situation United are in, he's probably about as good as you're realistically capable of getting.
