I know I said yesterday we’d make top 6 with Cunha and Osimhen but I admit I should have included a new keeper in that because if we stick with Onana Amorim may as well hand in his notice now and quit.
Sooo which keeper should we go for? I’ve seen some talk that James Trafford could be that guy and might be available for as little (or as much?) as £25 million.
Who else? I still hold a torch for Jordan Pickford but not sure he’s gettable.
New goalkeeper needed ASAP

A lot of that will be to do with the team, but apparently the amount of goals he’s saved them has been ridiculous as well.
It’s definitely a gamble, and why I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stay at Burnley so bigger clubs can get another look at him in the prem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that's the logical step but if he does have a great season he doubles in value and you might miss out on him
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Possibly, but it depends on which clubs need a keeper.
Looking at the bigger prem clubs right now I’m not sure which ones do, apart from Chelsea who collect keepers like stamps.

Hard to say cos things change in football so quickly. All part of the risk

Is Trafford better now than he was last season in the PL, has he kept improving? Didn’t really have a brilliant season then, which is hard for a relegated side obviously I know but sometimes keepers at those sides stand out and he didn’t.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hard to compare as it’s the Championship, so he’s playing at a different level, but he’s apparently had a dramatic improvement.
I read a little while back that he’s had statistically the best season by a keeper in the Championship since they started keeping records on them.

29 clean sheets (i think) in a Championship season is remarkable.
Obviously a keeper is part of a defensive unit but we've all seen how a keeper you don't have confidence in can really affect that unit.

Tbag, yeah that’s true. But I’m not sure Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, and City will be looking at him in the next year. Which leaves Villa, Newcastle, Chelsea and United.
The risk for United is also dependent on finances, as it’s a far bigger risk to not invest what we have in players that can help us score goals. As clownish as Onana is, he’s far better at his job than our forwards are right now.
Those Trafford stats I was talking about are based on save percentage and advanced keeper metrics apparently. I know save percentage isn’t everything for a keeper but his is about 85% this season for Burnley, which is ridiculous.

Yeah that's totally fair, although as an outsider it does seem like Onana is worth about negative 10 points a season but I'll have to defer to Hafi on that one.
That is a ridiculous stat.

Possibly, but he’s just hilariously high profile with what he does. We don’t concede a significant amount more than the teams fighting for the CL places right now, despite the state of the defence and the keeper.
But we’ve scored facking 38 goals this season in 33 games. For context, a Nuno Bin Laden team has scored 53.

To be honest, I don't think any team has been that great defensively this season, so I'm not sure it says a lot that we haven't concede much more than a lot of them.
All it does is show up our lack of goals and perhaps teams know they don't have score many to win against us

With onana in goal the defence can never feel comfortable as they know he can make an error at any moment. You can’t build a good stable defence or having calmness at the back with onana. He’s as much of a priority to replace as is a a striker.

Well yeah that’s my point. They can get by on conceded goals because their attack isn’t shiiiiit.
We need a better keeper, but is it as important as footballers that can help us score goals? Not for me, our attack is among the worst in the league.

Replacing Onana this summer is probably a step too far budget-wise.
We need a CF, LF, RWB and CM player as immediate priorities. I can't see how we can do all of that and add a GK on top.

Alex Meret is available on a free from Napoli. He’s only conceded 23 in Serie A and has no errors leading to goals in the last two seasons.
