Mainoo is dangerously on the edge of the box and has a decent shot but the so did Daren Gibson.

So did macheda

Bunch of pessimists. It's difficult to be an optimist these days.

Fair enough being gloomy about the club, but rushing to liken the best product of our youth system in many years to a couple of players who never kicked on from playing a bit part just comes across as wallowing in misery.

You can’t be optimistic with a misty optic

I was referring to comments in the thread above like "He hasn't shown any sort of ability in any game he has played to give me any reason to think he could be a CM for this club." But I'd also take issue with your view that he has shown almost no vision. I've seen him play lots of cute reverse passes / poking the ball through narrow gaps to break the lines. That's something in my view he's clearly capable of. He's also intelligent enough not to force it when it's not the right moment. What we haven't seen is him spraying lots of accurate long balls. He's done it again bit but more consistent progressive passing would be welcome. I'm not sure whether we put this down to technical limitations or playing slightly within himself as a young player, or tactical instructions from the coach. I'd also add that he's a surprisingly good tackler.
Pace is really the big question mark.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I missed this comment before replying but basically this. Though I don't think 'pace' per se is his issue - most CM's aren't quick. I think it's intensity/engine rather than pace. He's a languid-style of player which is easier to accommodate in certain set ups and harder in others.
One issue in Amorim's set-up is that teams find a way to exploit space behind the two CM's all too often, even with specialist DM's like Ugarte & Casemiro playing in there. We've then seen situations where three CB's are flat and deep and marking only one (and sometimes too attackers) whilst an opposition player has been given free reign to advance the ball forward behind our midfield two. We need a CCB who is very comfortable stepping forward into the CDM position in those moments in my view, or find some other way of constricting that space between the midfield two and the defensive three so that's there's simply less pitch to cover.
It's incredibly rare to find a CM who is both a fantastic ball-player as well as a ground-eating machine. It's usefully one or the other!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Vulnerability to fast transitions and counterattacks when the counterpress is beaten is an inherent issue with Amorim’s system, and I expect there’ll be serious attention paid to how to deal with that this summer.
Part of addressing it I suspect will be trying to prevent it happening in the first place: increasing the number of high build-ups allowing the back three to sit higher and reduce space between the lines; and improving the effectiveness of the counterpress (and pressing/traps more widely).

The trouble with judging our youngsters right now is that they’re not playing in a settled team or enviornment.
I’m sure both Garnacho and Mainoo would look a lot better in a different club, surrounded by experienced winners.

He’s not really a United youth prospect imo as he joined at 16 from Atletico. Talented guy with a poor attitude. No real loss and we make a decent profit so this is great news

Tbf, it's probably from years and years of a negative narrative from the media, reinforced by former United players employed to continually beat the negativity drum, deliberately or otherwise.
United and negativity tend to go hand in hand these days, it's part of footballing psyche.

so would most of Uniteds current squad if we were all honest. Like most of the recent ones who have moved away from the club have done
