RIP Uriah Rennie

The Premier League's first black referee, has died aged 65 .

Rennie officiated more than 300 games between 1997 and 2008, including 175 Premier League matches.

I didn't realise he had a spinal condition which had left him paralysed from the waist down. Such a physical presence on the pitch, players knew they couldn't really mess with him.

I was sorry to hear this. Way before the days of DEI legislation, Uriah Rennie got where he was purely on merit.

He was a real physical presence. Couldn't be pushed around or bullied by players and if I recall correctly he was a black belt in judo.
