One of the things we haven’t been post SAF is ruthless in getting rid of players. Especially in the Woodward era we became notorious for giving players huge renewal contracts when they were playing decently in the fear we’d lose them for free when all it really did was often leave us stuck with overpaid players that we struggle to shift.
Phil Jones, Shaw, Martial, Rooney and Rashford are examples post SAF of us giving lads long term huge contracts when in decent form and then they either become crocks or they get paid too much to move them on easily.
So that brings me to 2 players in their past year of contract. Two players you could argue have turned it around at United.
That being said I think it has to be the last year at the club for both. Maguire will be 33 and Casemiro will be 34 at the end of the season. Both on huge wages especially Casemiro.
Even if they have decent seasons the club needs to be ruthless and chase younger upgrades.
Casemiro & Maguire

Maguire should be a good backup to De Ligt this season, and although on the high side, his wages aren’t crippling.
He’s an important character in the dressing room, and no doubt exceptionally valuable to the development of the likes of Yoro, Heaven and probably even De Ligt.
All of the same could be said about Casemiro. If he was on the same wage as Maguire, and particularly if we were playing in Europe this season, I wouldn’t think about letting him go. But he’s just on too much money.
I wouldn’t be upset about letting Casemiro go for a small fee if a US or Saudi club came in for him. If he did go, though, I’d want a physically- and aerially-dominant midfielder brought in, even as a two season or so stop-gap.

It's not as simple as it was in SAF's day thanks to PSR.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So many folk i see say 'pay them off' dont quite understand how PSR works. Paying somebody off 2 years for example absolutely isn't an option anymore for clubs.
Loaning them out saves a lot more than paying them off would.

Both still have a part to play. Maguire was decent last season and cas is probably still a better cm option than mainoo or ugarte.

Not saying otherwise. My point is extending either’s current deal shouldn’t come into question unless it’s a huge pay cut.

I’ve probably been Casemiro biggest critic on here but he deserves immense credit for getting back into top shape and forcing his way back into Amorim’s plans.

For that alone he could be worth keeping unless a silly offer comes in. It shows a good example that a decorated pro like him is still willing to fight.

Agreed. No issue with him staying one more season. Amorims comments were interesting today though about our midfield lacking pace. It would suggest it won’t be Casemiro and Bruno.
I wonder if secretly Amorim wishes that Bruno had accepted the Saudi offer.

Ugarte and Mainoo may be a bit sharper than Casemiro, but they aren’t the quickest either.
This is (part of the reason) why we could do with a Baleba or Felix Nmecha.

With Maguire, Casemiro, Sancho and hopefully Rashford off the wage bill next Summer, the finances will look a lot healthier.
