Amorim (& Cunha) press conference

Some quotes from today:

Is Amorim pleased with the new arrivals?

“Really pleased. It's important to sign new players as soon as possible. Sometimes it's not possible but I'm really pleased. They've proved already in the Premier Legaue, that is really important in the moment. Matheus can play in different positions so you can change the starting XI so I'm pleased."

What's the striker situation and do you think you still need one?

“They (new signings) can play as a striker, we have Josh and Rasmus, our focus is to improve the connection between them. I don't know if the positions are there for them, they have to work. There are other players fighting for that position."

“The new signings are really humble, that is really important, and they chose to be here. They had other options, Champions League options, they read what people say about our club but they chose to be here and this is a key point for me."

“In the moment we need to be really careful when we sign a player. If I have to start the season with this squad I will be happy because all the players that are here want to be here. With Matheus and Bryan we are clearly a better team."

How important is pre-season for Luke Shaw?

“He is a world class player. You can feel in the small things, England have two finals and he has issues in the season but in the final he is always there, that means something but he needs to be fit, he needs to train to the limit and he is doing that. He's a great player but he has competition this season so I'm pleased with Luke."

How important to have players who are committed?

“You feel the bond between the players in the best teams, that is really important. We remind ourself how special it is to be at Manchester United, the best club in the world. I really like to be in a group that is healthy. We are going to suffer, we have problems, but that feeling of bonding from everybody is really important. It can help us to win games where we didn't perform so well. The spirit is positive."

How important to sell players?

“Some players have to move to make space in the team, others want a new challenge. We are giving them time to think and if they reach a point where they have to join the team they will."

“Omar and Jason have a number for these players, if that isn't reached they will be United players. I am ready to receive the players. I have more options and if they have to fight each other to play that is perfect."

Will Fernandes be a midfielder next season?

“He can be. We can change in the game but we miss Bruno as a No.10.
Sometimes when he is playing as a No.10 he comes to get the ball and nobody is a No.10. He can play in front also."

Signing Premier League players a new transfer approach?

“We need experience. Matheus is young but with experience. That was a policy we try to use this season so I say yes, it's not just that, they have characteristics that we need but we buy players who can face this kind of pressure."

One more bit about Mainoo

"I think he can play in both positions in the midfield. Last year, he played more in front - I think his perfect position is more near the ball, always with the ball.

"I think he's a big talent, and you guys know better than me that he's a big talent. I think he needs to increase the rhythm, the pace - I'm always on top of that with Kobbie because he's so good but sometimes he can be better.

"I have big plans but again, like I said, one game per week, the competition is going to be huge. Everybody has to be prepared to play one game or play all the games, that is a key point in our season."

I was just replying to Pote, who quoted Ruben with the intention of sharing positivity but those comments can mean anything.

He's basically saying Bruno can't stay in position. We all know this, he knows this, but Bruno will be the CM either way.
If Ruben can't get Bruno to stay in position or follow instruction, what does that say about Ruben?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I took it more as that Bruno is 'forced' to drop back when playing the No.10 position, and by doing so no-one is left in the number 10 position (almost like when Kane drops back from number 9 to get the ball etc, rather than stay up front)
In Bruno's case, I think it's probably more a case of saying we need someone solid in CM so that Bruno doesn't have to drop back so often.

Amorim has been very supportive of Bruno and praised him so much for last season. Maybe I have misinterpreted Amorim's meaning, but I certainly don't red it as a real criticism of Bruno.

As for Mainoo, I think Amorim has been consistent with him - great talent and player, and hopefully he continues to improve and we see more of that.

Next season is a big one for Mainoo - hopefully he fulfils the potential we saw in his first season and that we are not just saying 'he should come good' for us

It wasn’t my intention to share positivity.

I just found those to be the two most interesting, and potentially instructive, comments from Amorim at the presser.

I’m not one to defend Amourinho, but he’s not saying Bruno can’t following instructions he’s saying that we need a player in the 10 position when Bruno is on the ball in deeper areas.

It’s about having more attackers in those central areas.

My phone just autocorrected Amorim to Amoron, which is entirely your fault.

Amorim’s quotes definitely didn’t come across as negative, although for me the fact Bruno does come deep shows he isn’t great at keeping his position which will become a bigger issue if he’s to play as a CM. If he goes looking for the ball and leaves our only other CM alone we’ll get screwed over.

Is it Bruno can't keep to position or is it nobody deeper is good enough to spread the ball around so he drops back to do the job himself?

Fair enough

This is why I hate our formation / style.
4-3-3 would be perfect for Bruno, with him as the focal point of the 3, and two solid midfielders behind him.

3-4-3 or whatever we play, can't fit Bruno in without sacrificing something from his game as we'll always have wing backs and two central players.

When we had our best 4-3-3 manager yet, the manager who signed him and made made him the star he is, he was sacked. Now he is 30 years old and on his inevitable decline, we should do everything to make him shine.

Sounds like a good plan

I don't think he's on the decline at all. Reckon he's got 3-4 years left at the level he plays.
