PL spending just reached the highest ever level for a window.
That got me thinking. Transfer fees have gone up massively since the turn of the millennium, but Who Wants to be a Millionaire has kept the same prize values since it started in 1998.
So how much is a 1998 million pounds worth now?
Well it is worth almost exactly half of what it was in 1998.
So if you win the million, it's equivalent to half a million.
You get 500k for answering the million pound question these days. Seems harsh.
Therefore the prize money for the final question in the next series should be 2 million to account for inflation.
BUT
Then you factor in inflation in house prices, a practical thing to use your winnings for. A million pound house in 1998 is now £5.8m for the same house.
So the prize money for the final question in practical terms should probably be about 5 million.
BUT
Alan Shearer is only £30m in today's money compared to £15m in the 90s, if only inflation is used. But that doesn't take into account football inflation.
So say you wanted to buy a football player after going on Who Wants to be a Millionaire in 1998 vs 2025?
With your £1m winnings in 1998, what kind of player could you buy? Players like Paul Merson, Nigel Martyn, or Gary McAllister moved for fees around or just above £1 million in the late 1990s.
How about in 2025?
Arsenal women signed Olivia Smith from Liverpool for £1 million, so you couldn't afford a male player.
You could only afford a female player.
1990s Alan Shearer is estimated to be £222m in today's market. You'd need your million to be 15 times that of 1998. So £15m should be the current prize for Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
Yet the questions and prize values in Who Wants to be a Millionaire remain the same as in 1998!
Just in case you were wondering.

Levy: Oh this is unsustainable.
Repeat every year for past 10 years and counting.
Whilst the rest of the league keep spending.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe Spurs will be the last team left standing at the end of it

Levy knows best!

The bubble will burst eventually. The PL is just a disgusting farce. Might aswell call it the Goldman Sachs Greed league. So far removed from normal people
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If there's demand it won't.
Build it and they will come...
A bit like the housing market.
Football on a worldwide scale is still growing. USA & Asia still massive demand and £££

England might not be able to win a world cup but we're world class at selling out to foreign investors and filling our teams with players from all four corners of the globe, managed by foreign managers. Weird to think that English clubs used to win European Cups with entirely British teams. The England team was still sh*t but it shows that selling our souls isn't the only way.

Marketing World Cup champs for sure. Every year I lose a bit more interest in this league

It's getting worse year by year. The large number of clubs run by American investors may eventually lead to the Americanisation of our sport. Over the top half time shows, play stopped for adverts, interviews with players and coaches while the game is still being played. Can't wait.

Not really like the housing market though, sadly, because they aren't building it.

All that money spent, and not a Messi, Pele, Muller, Puskas, etc in sight. Mostly spent on bog standard ordinary players that would hardly have got a game 30 years ago.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's probably because those players are all either retired or dead. But you want to dig Pele up and make him play for Spurs then go for it. He's good enough to adapt his game.
