Celtic Board

Think they should do what is needed and tie Kayal down to an improved contract. Still no news on this front and it is a worry; he is one of our top players and the figures getting banded about (2-5m) are ridiculous considering it is EPL clubs that are bidding for him. I know people are saying 8-10m for him but that is unrealistic (McGeady went for 9m after CL performences, international etc). The board need to speculate to accumulate - tie him down now as its obv he is going to get better and in a few seasons he will go for the money McGeady, Hutton, Gordon etc went for. Porto, PSV, Ajax all do this; they tie down their players, managers etc to contracts that ensures they get top dollar when interest intensifies and they decide they want to move.

How can Samaras merit a new contract yet the board let this situation escalate? We need to keep the core players of our team together and they wont want to stay if they aren't getting the deals they feel they deserve. For instance Kayal will rightly be thinking that he should be on the same wage levels as Broony and Ledley and this is natural in all places of work not just football, if you do a better job than your colleague then you will feel you deserve the same money. FFS Hinkel is making at least 15k a week, dont know what Maloney's on but can only guess that it's at least the same as Hinkel if not more.

What do people think on this? I for one think we should get this lad tied down to a new and improved contract because it was obvious that Kayal was the driving force behind Celtic last season and feel more is still to come. I want to read about potential players coming into Celtic not one of our best players potentially leaving over a contract. Sort it out board he deserves it unlike some journeymen that have come to club recently and milked 30-40k a week wages from our great club (Gravesen, Freddie etc).
Get. It. Sorted. NOW

Rant over

i ve heard from a few folk that Kayal is on less than 10k a week (i know how daft that sounds dismissing thousands a week but this is fitba where logic has no place) pretty sure if i was bossin the midfield week after week i'd want parity with Broon/Commons etc

When it comes to negotiations Lawell must be a right tough cookie to deal with , but i m confident he ll be here for next season at least

Tie him down? He's still got another 3 years left on his contract. I agree that he should be paid the same as other players in his position as he does the best job but that doesnt help when our captain who is on £25k a week is the benchmark.

If Kayal was not happy to play for £8k a week then he would never have signed that contract with us. I believe he should get improved terms but the board dont have to do anything as he's still got 3 years on his contract and we dont have to let him talk to anyone.

Celtic took a chance on Kayal. As much as he looks a good player he has barely managed half a season.
Tell him to play out his skin till Jan,keep us in Europe and continue improving-maybe then we will talk.

thats probably the approach Lawell etc will take HelpMordor, but i think we all know its mutually beneficial he signs an improved contract, he ll never see out 3-4 years at CP the way he's going so its a wee insurance policy for the club that he's happy.
Unhappy players tend to drop in value.

Wilson,Commons,Ledley,Izaguirre as well as Kayal done ok last season.Do we keep them happy as well?
Sorry mate,I know where you are coming from but surely a small part of it has to be about Celtic as opposed to the players?

There are positives in getting him on a better deal. It will keep the player happy meaning he is more likely to perform well. It may mean we will get more for him in the future. Kayal is one of the lowest paid players at the club.

Correct me if i am mistaken but summer 2010 when Kayal, Izzy signed were they not given the basic wages they are currently on with the promise that if they perform well they would get a new and improved contract this summer. Call me a pessimist but you see it all the time with contract disputes and the trouble it can cause. I rate Kayal very highly and would much rather see him at Celtic next season than selling him for 5m this summer due to a stupid disagreement. We need to build a squad that is strong and would much rather hear about Juarez, McGinn, Cha etc etc potentially leaving than our best players. Their wages would easily cover improved contracts for our better players.

True HelpMordor,

but i dont think for a minute Kayal is holding a gun to Celtic's heed over this, as i say negotiation involves a bit of bluff on both sides. Kayal is nt ready for the EPL quite yet and would benefit from another year in the SPL and a run in Europe(fingers crossed) and at the same time he's entitled to be payed what he's worth (parity wi the other 1st team players)for being a key player.

Hopefully this will be settled soon as these things can become problematic if either party feels hard done by.

JP-you make it sound as if we should go cap in hand to these players.A Honduran & an Israeli league player?
After last season would you make Kayal the highest paid pro at Celtic?
He may be the best player and worth a lot more than he agreed to be paid but he still has 3-4 years left on a contract. Why worry?Feed him win bonuses, make him feel valued but don't increase his basic, yet.

He will get an improved deal as will Izzy, its pre-season everyone is on holiday. The papers have nothing to write about and keep regurgetating the same stories teams wanting kayal, teams wanting Izzy and Rangers signing everyone under the sun as they have some money to spend. This will continue right up till the transfer window shuts.
