A Solution?

Morning all, as is now customary following a defeat, the doom and gloomers are out in force voicing their concerns (quite rightly) but offering little in terms of a possible solution. We seem to be indecisive as a group as to what we want. Should he go? Should we persevere? There is no right answer at the moment and until Phil has enough we will be sticking with OC.

As we saw last season, up until THAT day, we were going well and never dropped out of the top 9, which shows that OC does have qualities to become a good manager. The thing is, he is inexperienced and relatively new to management in the scheme of things, and he has bad habits and is struggling to overcome them.

Personally I think he needs to re-shuffle his backroom staff. I know they worked with him during his success with Burnley and he has shown faith in them. But the Premiership is a different kettle of fish. He is coming up against teams with far more experienced managers and/or far better players. Unfortunately for Owen he doesnt have the class of players to hide his naivity as a manager. He needs someone with the experience and know-how to guide him and help him develop into the manager he is capable of. Unfortunately its Owen who picks his staff and we all know he is a loyal person so its unlikely that he'll replace anyone. So is a director of football required just to help him along? Someone like Walter Smith who is probably too old to come back into management but still has alot to offer the game.

Its just a thought and I appreciate anyones opinions on this either if you agree or not. And if not what sort of solution would you propose, and back it up.

You're on your own with that one. Which iPhone do you have?

When it's loaded onto your keyboard and your typing like this, look at the button with a circle in between your 123 button and the space bar. Press that and it changes the keyboard to the emotions one..

Bricks I don't say Owen has no back room my friend but are they the RIGHT people? He brought some from Burnley with him and I understand why but are they actually up to sbuff in this league?

And no defensive coach is not just a problem it's a whacking great glaring omission that MUST be corrected. Sam had a very very good team of people around him. Are Owen's of similar calibre or are they simply filling a slot that could be handled more effectively by someone else? I hate to see people lose their jobs as it's happened to me and I'm sure several others on this forum and I hated even more the times as a manager myself when I said 'Sorry we have to let you go' to someone who was not good enough or was simply out of order. It's a horrid thing to do and to have done to you but this sadly is the real world and we are talking about a business where results aren't just the MAIN thing. They're the ONLY thing. Owen is definitely an excellent man manager. BUT is he perhaps not ruthless enough? The back room staff might well need a real shake up, not just the ones he brought from Burnley but ALL of them. We may not have much money to play with but in all honesty I think Owen needs more help than he's clearly getting now. You can have a hundred people in that back room team but if they're not the RIGHT people then they're worse than useless.

Sam didn't have a defence coach either. Did we need a defence coach in November last year?

JAH Sam WAS a defender himself so why would he need one? Owen was a striker and let's face it we aren't talking about Last Novemeber. We're talking about THIS Novemeber and a goal difference of minus twelve after nine league games tells its own stark tale.

Look, the fact is that Owen started out superbly and we lost a lot of impetus thanks to injuries etcv etc (been done to death won't do it all again) but it's clear that with the second string out there we need better coaching on the very basics of defence. We all know the problems and I'm only offering what I see as the best solution with the resources we have. A specialist defence coach, midfield and attack coaches with Owen overseeing that, then talking to those coaches as I posted above and picking the team based on what he sees and what the coaches tell him (as well as the opposition and tactics required of course)

I know some people will still think the manager should be able to do it all but the fact is in the prem today you need a specialist for almost everything if your manager is going to have a real chance to succeed in the long term.

I still think we have players with the quality to get us well clear of this and that Owen's the man to do it BUT he needs the right kind of support.

Peter I pretty much agree with you, but I just wanted to ascertain if your info on the coaching requirement was based on first hand information from Euxton or if it was purely based on your view of our performances from watching Wanderers matches in person or on the TV?

Also remember Zat was brilliant last season in comparison to the season before that. This season he has lost his way for whatever reason and has struggled, Gretski and Robbo the same. If these players knew how to defend properly last November, why do they need a different coach this November, unless there has been a coaching change/training change at Euxton since last year. Hence my question, do you have first hand knowledge of the coaching at Euxton? Or second hand knowledge for that matter? (not being argumentative)
