Brewers 3 v Wombles 2

Great result today and a great performance by all. Still feel that teams can carve through our defence like a welding torch through butter, but we are fifth and cementing a play-off place for ourselves.

I usually write my views on the game, but this week I had to do that on the Vital Football Burton Albion site and, quite frankly, I am knackered from typing. If you want to have a look then feel free to navigate your way across there.

Come on you Brewers!!

Agree with earlier posts - a good game of football with both sides wanting to get forward.

A few scary moments at the back but then so many opportunities on the break. It could have been 6-5, though I think we probably just about deserved a bigger margin of victory. Their keeper made th better saves and we missed a shed load in the second half.

Calvin could have had a hat trick and Billy probably would have if Calvin hadn't got in his way a couple of times. Almost like he was trying too hard?

Have to say that the strength of the squad is starting to pay dividends.

I agree that Bolder had his best game in weeks. Surely can't be coincidence that it came on the day that if he wasn't suspended, it would probably have been Macca with Chris Palmer in the middle.

Palmer certainly played his part. Good contribution for most of the afternoon and he was cauing all sorts of problems with his corners.

And what about Andy Corbett? Left out of the starting eleven but I thought he was excellent second half. Another one saying 'you can't leave me out!'

Only a cameo from Andres Guerreri but he showed a good touch on a few occasions. Like to see more.

TJ strong again, and with Rhino & Macca back next game, and Justin Richards supposedly a couple of weeks away, it's going to be a real challenge to sort out who gets into the match day 16.

Agree with most things , very good game felt we had the
chances to finish the game though, yet again our defence let us down for both goals but a good team effort.
Nice to know we have players coming back to compete for places .

Think i would agree with all the plus and minuses mentioned, it was a good game today and Wimbledon showed plenty of spirit, but we played may be aswell as we have for many weeks. We are 5th in the table without really having played the football we are capable of playing and been grinding out results which bodes well for the 2nd half of the season. Crawley away is a massive game in terms of our aspirations. We don't usually fare too well there so to come back with anything would be great for morale and belief. Up the ALBYUN !

Crawley away. Did anyone go to that last game there when Stridey got sent off in the first 6 or 7 minutes and we got battered 4-0?

Just one observation from saturdays game comments to ponder.
Someone said it was Bolders best game for ages.
Was it just a coincidence that Magrath was missing.
People know my thoughts on him.
Far too negative to have him and Bolder in the side together.
Thought Palmer had a really good game and we looked a lot stronger with him along side Bolder especially when the opposition had the ball.
I will try and explain what i mean.
When Magrath plays and the opposition have the ball crossing the halway line the ball is usually between Magrath and our goal.
With Palmer in there on saturday he was usually between the ball and our goal.
Magrath plays a lot of his football facing our goal.
Palmer allows Bolder to venture forward more and unlike Magrath, Palmer isnt scared to stray more than 10yds away from Bolder.
my opinion is to bring back Magrath straight away would be a negative step.
Be brave Pesch

A good point raised Pez, and I have a slightly different theory (I think....).

For me, McGrath and Bolder are very similar players and take up similar positions on the pitch, hence the reason we seem to be very compacted at times. As happened in the second half at both Oldham and Hereford, plus the whole game on Saturday, the introduction of an attack-minded midfielder frees up space, allowing the more defensive of the pairing more space to patrol. It is no coincidence that against Oldham and Hereford Macca was the best Burton player on the pitch, whilst against Wimbledon Bolder (rightly or wrongly) got the man-of-the-match award.

Mopping up in front of the defence is what both Macca and Bolder do best; breaking up play and moving the ball out of danger. Therefore it hasn't been surprising to see both of them playing more forward balls, especially as they have recently had more outlets in the form of Chris Palmer.

It was brave of Pesch to actually make the change, although Macca's suspension forced his hand this time around. What will be interesting will be what side he selects for the Crawley game in two weeks' time....

Did anybody notice the exchange of hand signals between Zola and the manager after Key put Zola clear 1 on 1 with the keeper and he managed to hit the keeper?

Excellent McGrath / Bolder analysis chaps. Absolutely spot on with your reasoned arguments, explanations and conclusion. I am a convert.

The one thing that we were promised when we signed Chris Palmer was that he would be good on putting the ball in to the area. That has really been the case. An excellent great crosser of the ball.

Excellent mature analysis of the game, a credit to JA606, and Pesch would do well to read it. Realistic informed analysis to which its hard to add , but here's a few brief (for me) bullet points;

- Great performance, slick football, sustained for most of the match, should have and could have scored many more goals.

- To a man they all played well!

- My overiding memory is of a confident Andy Corbett
looking a really good player as he played attackingly down the right wing.

- What a great match! Which I think reflects well on Wimbledon. I thought the match was played in a good spirit and I even thought the referee was well above average. (I'd like to see Wimbledon do well !)

- At the end I felt really emotional, as if we'd won the division, and I was bouyed up by it for several days.

Dissappointment : that were only 3,282 to watch it (10th highest of 12 games this weekend) and we do not make enough noise to show the team we are really behind them!!

And finally an"irrational fear ?": that we will lose "our Rooney" (Billy Kee) and this could be the best it gets..

Long live good football ! and matches like Saturdays!

Push on you Brewers! Destiny awaits you!
Brewer Dave
